Preying on Out of Work People, Abusive Work Environment

This company advertises continuously in the Greensheet, which is a small-time Houston paper. It is a telemarketing boiler room with blankets over the windows. They do not even provide a water cooler but have vending machines so you can buy water.in all my years in the workforce, I have never seen even the lowliest sleazebag dump not have a water cooler. The phones are filthy and you must wipe them off with a sani-wipe or risk catching God knows what.

They do not have their company name on the door, which is shady in my book. They are taking advantage of the high unemployment rate to hire and discard people like used Kleenex. I do not know the name of the people who they actually represent but it is another company in another state, so they are brokers of some sort. I have heard them tell people they will receive a bill from so and so but I don't remember the name, but it's in North Carolina I do believe.

They are ALWAYS hiring, which should be the tip off. This means that they are ALWAYS firing. I sat through one and half days in a disorganized boiler room where magazine renewals are being hawked over the phone. They do not have a computer system. They are in the Stone Age. You hand dial every call and work off overworked and crummy lead sheets. Other people's scrawl is all over the leads. Most of the people don't answer the phone, or they tell you they do not subscribe to the magazine that you are supposedly trying to renew for them. Lots of answering machines and rude people who are not interested and hate telemarketers. They start new people off with TV Guide and Reader's Digest, and you're lucky to get a sale your first night. Even their supposed 'new' leads are 99% lousy. If you are a professional salesperson you will go crazy very shortly in this environment. The manager is greedy, high-strung and threatening and talks to the women like dogs most of the time.

The manager, Roy Perez, is a bully who thinks that intimidating and threatening people all during the shift is the way to increase production. I was brand new with an extensive sales background and took this position because jobs are so scarce. I made two sales the first night and lost one because of their messed up way of handling things. They don't trust the telemarketer to close the sale and get the payment info.instead, you must turn the sale over to Roy, while the customer waits at least ten or more minutes for a call back from him. I watched while many sales were lost when Roy called back. Sales is IMPULSE and if you make people wait for another call, they have too much time to think and back out... And I saw many potential sales lost this way. Two of mine included. So out of three sales I only got one because of their system. Roy does not mention during training that you are expected to have six sales your first night. None of the new people did but I was the only one thrown out the door today.

Roy trolls the sales floor YELLING at everyone to push harder, harder, harder. He also lets everyone know in no uncertain terms that he has people waiting right there in the room to take your chair. BULLYING AND ABUSIVE and not at all conducive to promote a feeling of comfort or security in a new environment. Quite the opposite. You sit there in fear, unable to work effectively, as he also lets you know he is watching your every move and listening.'If you slam the phone down, you are going home'."If I hear you say the wrong thing on the phone, you're outta here'... And so on, all through the miserable six hour shift.

This company is located on the corner of FM 1960 and I-45 behind Barney's Billiards. They turn over 1,000 people a year. That is a FACT. They play favorites with the people who somehow have had the tenacity to hang on in such a miserable job. The pay is rotten unless you are given an expensive magazine to sell.

I was summarily let go for NO REASON and feel that the EEOC needs to investigate these people. There is a stock stable of old hands who work there, and if for some unknown reason (like you might be pretty or perceived as a threat to their place on the pecking-order) they tattle behind your back and give dirty looks. Kind of like kindergarten.

Roy is nothing but a really bad used car salesman with a huge ego to match his short-man's Napoleon complex. I am warning unemployed Houstonians to not buy into working at this place... You won't last long. The turnover means something is wrong with them, not you. A good company gives people a chance and does not throw them into the street for no reason. A good company realizes that people need a few days to get adjusted. Roy is a tyrant and admits as much. When he becomes unemployed, let's see how he feels!
