Complaint / Review
Macy's Downtown Seattle
Scary Place to Work

I was recently terminated from Macy's... For the following
unauthorized price adjustments
The day prior to this I was called upon by my manager to be Reviewed, nothing was ever mentioned to me that my price adjustments were in question, I had the authorization code to make such adjustments and was given a new hire to train. That afternoon this new hire tells me that I had just done a price adjustment incorrectly and that I needed to have her train me. Unaware of the policy she quoted to me, I told her that I would check on this with my manager the following day. The following day, Loss Prevention calls me into the office for interview under the guise that I was being "promoted" and that they were just "gathering information". After which two hours of being grilled, questioned and accused of questionable behavior, I was upset. The Loss prevention Agent had been recording me and asked me to write a statement that he basically dictated to me, telling me it would "save my job"...
Needless to say they sent me home and told me someone would call me the following day, which never happened untill a week later and I was told that I had been terminated. Ok. Several Months after being denied for Unemployment Benefits, I recieve a letter from Macys that I am being sued for attorney's fees. I get a letter from Unemployment that Macys is denying my claim and I must attend a hearing. Now according to the Macys Solution handbook, I am entitled to an arbitration whenever there is a problem, this was never an option or even suggested. I was never represented by my union, even after numerous phone calls. They never even offered to assist me in any way. So goes this arbitration meeting whereas I am supposed to according to Macys handout... Have information regarding the issues. What they have in order for me to defend myself and what I have in order for them to use. This never happened. To my dismay they had 10 transactions totaling approx. 144.00 some dollars over a year period where there were price adjustments past a 10 day period. One that another employee had done on my account in my favor for 21.00... This one in particular had been a purchase that I had left in a bag and forgotten about untill I was moving and discovered that it didnt fit and it was on my debit card without a Macy discount, it was returned to credit my macys account and I had found another one in a different size. So, I had gotten it on Sale and a macys discount to boot. Wow... Never in a million years did I ever think this was wrongdoing.in the arbitration a wittness I brought had several transactions from other employees that were price adjustments for 200.00 to 4,000.00 and those employees were not being terminated. Needless to say, Macys and the big corporation won the arbitration and now I am left to appeal this. I am a single mother of a child, and basically loved this job. But, to have to work for a company where people look for something to be wrong is WRONG. I was employed at Nordstroms prior to this and was trained for over a week on the "Nordstrom Way"... Returns were NEVER QUESTIONED, our job was customer service and we were trained to make that customer happy, to bring them back into our store. We were trained for a week.
I applied at Macys online was called in within 2 days for an interview and started within the week, basically sent out to the sales floor. There was never any training, no coaching, you had to just be smart enough to figure things out for yourself, you basically had to go upon your own resources. When I was told of a Handbook in the Arbitration, both myself and my witness were stunned, What Handbook and why did we not get one. I actually stood outside of a Macys for an entire day interview people walking in and out with bags. Several of the InGoing people did not know the following: You only have 10 days to return items with a receipt... Its in the fine print on the back of the receipt, Many could not even read the back of the receipt. The return policies vary from people to people and store to store it was very confusing and the policy was very UNCLEAR and Confusing.
