I received a check in the mail "from" Sallie Mae saying that I made an overpayment on my student loan in July. This loan has been paid in full for almost 10 years and no payment has been paid since. When I called to inquire about it, the first question asked was "What is your social security number?" The second question was "What is your account number". The account number did not appear in the letter or the check. The wait to speak to an account rep is always estimated to be over an hour so I haven't spoken to anyone live.
Maybe I'm throwing some money in the garbage by tearing up this check, but it seems very odd. Maybe they are just looking for folks to provide their social security number. I don't know but I'd be interested to see if anybody has seen this before.
