A chubby, young caucasian male appeared at my door without any materials visible in his hands. Very friendly. He appeared about 18 but later said that he was 24. He stated that he was new to the neighborhood (even gave the address) and his school was asking that he meet so many new neighbors (I have forgotten the number). Although very glib, I originally thought he was a mentally-challenged high school boy. After exchanging a few words, he brought forth his magazine materials and a well-worn, laminated ID card with his picture and fingerprints!
Then he stated that he was attending our state university and was raising money to go to London to visit the BBC. This same description and scenario has been mentioned elsewhere on this site!
He managed to get in the house because of his friendliness and we sat at the kitchen table while I reviewed the slim magazine selection - mostly children's magazines. He was very flattering but not flirtatious, curious about my life such as what had been my main accomplishment in life, etc. I was definitely suspicious but this guy has had practice! Mind you, he was not attractive, had on flip flops, baggy clothes, etc., but not scarey either.
As in other descriptions, the magaizine ended up being expensive at $30 but the final sales slip showed a total of $43! He stated that the magazine was $13 and the $30 was for "his trip".
So, off he goes and immediately I feel scammed. My neighbor called shortly thereafter because he had visited her and she felt the same way. Both of us are intelligent, middle-aged women who, under different circumstances, would know better. Unfortunately, the elderly lady down the street came out worse. We have both stopped payment on the checks.
I have contacted our local paper and the police to warn others. This guy gets around the nation from other information that I have read!
