I have had Direct TV for several years. I upgrade when the equipment starts failing. Last time, We had the contract in my wifes name, and when the equipment started going on the fritz, I asked about repair service. Since I had the equipment for over 4 years, it was going to cost me as much as $200.00 to get it replaced. It would also require me to extend my service contract for to more years with the current old equipment. My wife and I decided to open an new account under my name and get the new DVR with the account and a separate tuner for the bedroom. When the direct tv installation technician finished installing the new equipment, he took the old equipment with him. We thought that he would send it back to the company. We called the Direct TV hot line and told them to turn off the old account because it was no longer in use. The woman on the phone told us that she could not do this until the end of our current billing period which was already paid for the month of May.
Unknow to us the technician that took the old equipment or one of his friends used the old equipment and watched several pay per view movies and xxx rated shows on the equipment and never told anyone. A few months later, I get a call from a collection agency for unpaid balance of my old account in the amount of $199.00. I told them that I did not owe anything to them, and was told that I was responsible for everything seen on that receiver until the 27 th of May, and that it was my fault because I was responsible for returning the equipment to Direct TV, not the technicians. When I tried to get in touch with the technician, he no longer worked for them. I called Direct TV and told them of this sequence of events and was told that Sorry, that is their way of doing business. I told them to come get the other equipment, and I was through doing buisiness with a bunch of crooks. I can't close the account for two years without paying the penalty.
