Reader's Digest Sweepstake
Recieved check to pay Provincial and Federal Taxes on sweepstake winnings of $550,069.00 Canada

I recieved a letter with Candian postage and no return address on July 13th. The letter head stated that it was from Reader's Digest, Alanta, Ga. But the phone number listed on the letter is a Candain exchange.
The letter read as follows:
Reference No: #-#
FROM: THE DESK OF MANAGING DIRECTOR OF PRIZE AWARD DEPARTMENT "WITHOUT PREJUDICE"

Dear, My Name
This is to inform you of the release of our SWEEPSTAKE DRAW held on June 9th. Your ticket Number #_# drew the lucky numbers #-#-#-#-# which won the prize in that category. Therefore your number has been approved for a lump sum payout of FIVE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND AND SIXTY NINE DOLLARS ($550,069.00) in cash credited to file reference number #-#.

The check enclosed is part of your winnings and has been sent to you from our affiliate insurance company to cover PROVINCIAL AND FERERAL TAXES on your funds.
Since we do not deal directly with the public, this notice has been forwarded to you from one of our licensed and bonded Norht American Agencies and a copy would be sent to the insurence company. YOU ARE HERBY REQUIRED TO CINTACT ASSIGNED ATTORNEYS FROM KIRKLAND & ELLIS LLP: JENNIFER DESMOND AT 1-778-318-4967 OR JIM PATTERSON AT 1-778-318-4892 TO ACTIVATE YOUR CLAIM BEFORE YOU DEPOSIT THE CHECK IN YOUR BANK, THIS IS IMPORTANT.

Congratulations and we look forward to hearing from you.

John Freeman
Chief Executive Financial Officer

Jennifer, told me that I was to deposit the check and call her back and then she would contact the Candain government to see about paying the taxes and fees that would apply in order for me to claim my money. She admitted she was in Canada and that the fees would have to be paid in lou of my going to Canada personnaly. The enclosed check was for $2980.04, from AIG Annuity Insurance Company Amarillo Tx.
I have not been to my bank but I am certain the check will be fake. All of the address on the letter and check seem to be good but the phone numbers are all Canadian exchanges.
Why cant Readers Digest and or our Law Enforcement Agencies put out somthing to expose these fauds. And not just on the internet. Not everyone uses a computer. Newspapers, TV news ect. It is said to here that these scams have been going on for years and that people are still getting taken by them because they were not informed. I guess it is not sensational enough. One person getting taken for their life saving dont compare to MJ dying.
