On Nov. 28, I received a letter from Liberty Holdings stating I had received a grant in the amount of $37,000. Enclosed was a check for $4,780.10. All I had to do was deposit it into my checking account and from that amount, withdraw $3,150.00. That amount was to pay the necessary taxes and fees on the total amount.
Once I had done that, I would receive a check by courier in the amount of $33,850.00. They also stated it was a grant and did not have to be paid back. It said to call and activate the account and speak to Paul Dawson or Lillian Young. And as soon as my claim was filed, Annette Stewart an escrow agent would release my funds to me.
I called this number on the 28th, and 29th. It went to a voicemail, I left messages and never got a phone call back. I made copies of the check and letter and faxed it along with a letter I had written to the address located in Long Island City. After faxing the letter I attempted to call the number again. Much to my surprise, they answered.
The man claiming to be Paul Dawson instructed me to deposit the check into my checking account, wait for it to clear, which he said would take 24 hours, withdraw the $3,150.00 and Western Union $2,998.00 of it to Annette Stewart of 66 Nichols Ave, Brooklyn, NY and the remainder $152.00 was the fee for the WesternUnion charges. I went to my bank the next morning and presented the check and asked them if they could verify that the check was real.
After over a week of my bank checking on the check, it came back that the check was a fake. They took a copy of the letter I received and are taking the necessary measures as well to report the scam. I am taking it also upon myself to report them and to help provide any information necessary to make sure this does not happen to me or anyone else again.
These people claim that I have filled out a contest application and that is how I was selected. I fill out alot of applications, so to me it was possible, I know not everything is a scam, but I am glad I was smart enough not to just act on greed and stupidity.
