Unfair collecting practices

On October 28, I wrote a letter to Global Financial to cancel the membership contract for a martial arts school I joined just two weeks prior. I had joined the martial arts school, but was not able to continue due primarily to medical reasons. Since I was canceling within 30-days, I first wrote a letter asking respectfully for a cancellation. I had stated that I was suffering job loss and replacement due to very tough economic times that we are all facing. However, I received a very cold letter via mail stating that the 1-year membership could not be cancelled if not done within the first 3-days. I was stunned that a "contract" for a martial arts school would have such fine print obligation. I felt really coerced because I was not explained to that point when I was signing that contract at the martial arts school. I was also amazed that the school would align themselves with such a company that insists on collecting money for services that are not going to be rendered. As the customer I felt that canceling within 30-days due to economic hardship (especially in this economic crisis the country is in) was within my right of the law. A week later, I wrote a second letter explaining that I am suffering from appendicitis and my doctor ordered me not to practice martial arts of that nature. I was not aware that I should not do martial arts, but was expressly told by my doctor upon having an appointment with him. I explained to Global Financial that I could not continue even if I wanted to due to medical limitations now. I called Global Financial and then wrote to them about this. They again said it was not their problem and that I should pay for a year, even if I can't go, due to the contract, etc. At this point I was outraged. I am trying to do everything I can to work with this company. I believe I gave advance notice in the beginning with good intentions. Then I was told by my doctor that I could not do this activity due to medical reasons. I even provided a letter written to me by my doctor with those orders. I have been very, very cooperative, but Global Financial just wants money for services I cannot receive. I did pay the first month as well as an initial sign-up fee that I didn't even use. Again, I only attended the martial arts school two weeks. I only want for them to cancel the contract and stop billing me for services I am not receiving. Please help me, as they are not very nice people and have no desire to work with me. Thank you very much for your time. (P.S. Global Financial changed their phone number. Their phone number is 410-560-0088; their fax is 410-560-0110. The contact person is Ronald Song.)
