Capital Credit Alliance
30 day ripoff to cancel, call, send a letter, the company says they never received the letter!

With promises of improving my college son's credit line, this company offered a $9000 credit limit on an interest free credit card.in order to cancel the card, you must notify them within 30 days.

When the information arrived in the mail 20 days later and upon closer review of the "offer", a call was made to the company to cancel. He was then instructed that the notification to cancel had to be done by written letter. The following day a letter was written to cancel and sent in the mail.

This offer is not an actual credit card, but a Merchant Services Card with a catalog of merchandise that a person may order from. Completely misleading.

On the 15th of the following month, three charges were made to my son's checking account from CCA. One for $99.00, another for $99.99, and another for $99.99. Since there was only $31.00 in the account at the time, 3 insufficient account charges of $30 each were charged against him. Fortunately, the bank stopped the payment request, and deducted the insufficient fund charges. It was obvious to the bank, that this was fraud.

I called CCA and after being forwarded to several people, Joyce (badge # not provided) was in the process of turning me over to a supervisor. 8 P.M. Eastern time, my phone went dead. The company was closed. I had just spent about an hour on the phone.

The following night I spoke with Kevin Badge ID 66571 who turned me over to Kurtress, (badge # not provided) a supervisor with CCA.in essence, she said the letter never arrived, and that he should have requested in the first letter "a confirmation of receipt", or called to make sure the letter had arrived.

Kurtress now informs me that another letter needs to be written to cancel the account, but since the 30 days has passed, he will still be responsible for the $289.98 fees and they will be submitted to his checking account again on the 16th of next month and if it's not paid, it will be turned over to a credit collection company! All of this, when there is no way he will ever utilize any services!

He closed his checking account.

The CEO of this company, C.W. Anderson is a predator, and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. How anyone can look at themselves in the mirror taking advantage of the working poor in America is appalling. Employees such as Joyce, Kevin, and Kurtress should be ashamed of themselves for working for such companies as CCA.

The Better Business Bureau should look into this.

The New York State Consumer Protection Board (CPB) issued a warning today about advance-fee credit cards, particularly a catalog credit card from Las Vegas marketed under the names "CCA" and "CCS First National Card."

Capital Credit Alliance also uses the name "Consumer Credit Services" (CCS). The company was sued by the Federal Trade Commission and the state of Nevada for allegedly engaging in deceptive business practices in 1998.

"But many consumers don't realize that these cards can only be used to purchase merchandise from catalogs distributed by Capital Credit Alliance and its partners, " warns CPB Chairperson and Executive Director Teresa A. Santiago.

"Throughout the CCA and CCS advertising, there are misleading statements and omissions that fool people into thinking this is a standard credit card offering worthwhile benefits for someone with bad credit, " said Chairperson Santiago.

For example:

* The company says it will waive its standard membership fee of $200.

FINE PRINT: This "benefit" is only available to customers who spend more than $500 on their first purchase. Otherwise they are charged the standard "activation" fee of $199;

*In addition to the $199 "activation" fee, consumers have also been charged $99 for an annual renewal fee, $99 a year for a "credit protection shield, " and another $99 annually for a "purchase security guard."

FINE PRINT: All of these are automatically charged unless a consumer calls in time to cancel;

* "You're already approved, " customers are told five times on the front page of the CCA sales letter.

FINE PRINT: "Since your new card is not a general credit card and is authorized for CCA catalog purchases exclusively, you're already approved for over 5,000 products to purchase from..."

Shameless business, positively shameless.
