I contracted with Stephens Custom Homes, LLC in May to repair my home that sustained severe damage from Hurricane Charley. The project was to have a completion date of 08/05. A downpayment of $6000.00 was paid by me to the above.
Extensive damage was done to my home by Glen Stephens and his employees.
Windows broken, window sills destroyed, large gouges out of tile and terrazzo floors and nearly all of the ceiling fans destroyed. One of the windows was a large picture window of thick, tempered, tinted glass that cost nearly $500.00 to replace.
I caught one of his workers stealing all the copper piping from my home and placing it into his personal vehicle. Glen Stephens had ordered his workers to place demolition waste from other projects into the dumpster on my property that was costing me $400.00 every time it was hauled away. They were witnessed on 3 separate occasions doing this.
I found drug paraphernalia and alcoholic beverage containers left my home by his employees. The job was abandoned in August. I had no further contact from Glen Stephens until November 05. He came to my rental home and was demanding $5000.00 more in payment, but had not completed enough work to merit the $6000.00 I had already paid him.
Glen Stephens was made aware at the time the contract was signed, that I had not received enough insurance funds to repair my home. I had requested and wad scheduled to go to mediation services in 10/05. When I informed him of this fact, he verbalized to me that it was not a problem. Work was to continue and he would be paid with additional insurance money. Work stopped, and G.S. Came to my home to complain to me about the his business problems. This was unacceptable, unprofessional and definitely not my problem.
Work stopped on my home, and I had no contact from him again until 11/05. Again, he came to my rental home and wanted to start work again. I discussed how I wanted my kitchen rebuilt and prestnted him with a floorplan. He began to argue with me that it couldn't be built the way I wanted it and presented me with some bizarre non-functional design. This entire scenario was witnessed by another individual with whom he became verbally agressive and inappropriate.
At this point, I informed G.S. Of his inept practice and that his services were no longer required. I sent him a registered letter listing my complaints.
In addition to the above, Glen Stephens sent one his workers to remove all the soffit and fascia from my house. I came home from work to fine the worker and all the aluminum in my yard. The material was not in his contract, as he was limited to only the inside of the house. I called him to question his actions, and he stated that "my dad must have done that". I demanded that his company replace the aluminum within 7 days. It is now 01/07, and still no aluminum. I had to take over as owner contractor, and my home is nearly completed. The kitchen was designed and built exactly as I wanted it and is the kitchen of my dreams.
Glen Stephens filed a lean on my property, and pursued a lawsuit against me. He tried to get my house sold at a foreclosure auction, and even sent his attorney to purchase the property. I terminated that plan legally. I will be joining a group of 4-5 individuals in Charlotte County, FL to file a class action suit against Stephens Custom Homes, LLC. This greedy, thieving, dishonest individual must be stopped from preying on persons whom have endured devastating circumstances. I have paid $25,000 in additional living expenses due to this individual, not to mention the stress and mental anguish caused by Glen Stephens.
