Same story as everyone else, I'm afraid.
They said I was already approved for a credit card, and just needed to verify that I had a valid checking account. This was where they had asked for my routing number and account number.
Then they asked for $200 to process the card, stating that I would later get $200 in purchase vouchers to compensate. I told them I had no money and that I could not make the purchase. They asked if they could charge $100 now and another $100 in two weeks and again I said no, I would have to decline. They hung up the phone immediately after I said the word 'decline'.
As I check the balance on my checking account almost daily, I found that they charged my account anyway— fortunately, I had next to nothing in my account. (I wasn't lying when I told them I had no money!) I called my bank immediately and reported the charge to them, and the bank immediately opened an investigation into the charge. I should have an answer in about two days, and I'll post the results.in the meantime, I'm opening an account at another bank.
