Overachiever Enterprises
Ripoff Door to door magazine subscription scam

A young African American, who said his name was James Strong, came to my door on Wednesday, 5/3/06 and said he was selling magazines to help himself and other underpriveledged kids get off the street and off drugs. Though skeptical at first and home from work sick I think the sinus medicine I was on made me gullable. He seemed genuinely honest and I felt sorry for the kid. He also had checks from some of my neighbors on the top of his clipboard as well as a listing of about 100 different magazines that they offer on a colored brochure, so it seemed legit. Little did I know he scammed us all.

I bought one magazine for $30 plus a $10 processing and handling fee. I paid cash and received a very legitimate looking receipt in triplicate that said I would begin receiving my magazine (Fine Cooking) in 90-120 days. I filed the receipt and forgot about it until I stumbled accross it this week (Jan. 2007).

Needless to say, I never received any magazines. At first I thought this kid pocketed my $40 and never turned in the paperwork. When I called the phone number on the receipt I got what appeared to be a voice message on a cell phone from an obviously caucasion man. I left a message but am not going to hold my breath waiting for a call. I then called directory assistance and they have no listing for Overachiever Enterprises. I gave the operator the address and she came up with the same business that Google.com does when I enter the address. One of a couple of businesses listed there is Executive Support Center. When I called the man that answered the phone said he had never heard of Overachiever Enterprises and was very short with me. He did say, after my numerous questions, that the building at that address has multiple tenants. Googling every other possible way of founding them brought me to this site.

It is so irritating and I thought of sending a letter demanding a refund via certified mail, but I am sure it would be a waste of time and would probably be returned to me.

I hope people read this and become wary of people coming to your door. As I am writing this, I just remembered that another guy came to the door selling newspapers with the same sob story about a month ago.
