First of all let me say, If I had known about "RIP OFF.com" I would have reported this much sooner.
I went to work for Swift Transportation at their Syracuse, NY terminal back in June. All of my paychecks were very low for an OTR driver, most of them being in the $250 to $350 range. I spoke to my superiors on several occasions about this and nothing ever changed.
The final straw was when I was in Chambersburg, PA. I went to pick up a load and the airline to the trailer was broken. I contacted my DM on the qual-comm and was told to contact their breakdown people. To make a long story short, I asked them to take me off the load to get me moving. Their reply was that I couldn't just bale out of the load. My reply back was that I wasn't baling because the trailer couldn't move until it was fixed and they could bring in another driver once it was fixed. When they refused I told them I was done.
Swift told me to take the truck to their Harrisburg terminal. When I asked how I was going to get home and get my personal belongings home they told me they would put me on a bus and ship my stuff home. I refused this and told them I was bringing the truck home and I would clean it out and then take it back to their Syracuse terminal (which it was out of). They told me that would be unauthorized use of the truck and they were charging me $1 a mile.
I never got one dime of my final paycheck from them. It is my belief that once they started charging me $1 a mile, I was now renting the truck and there can be no unauthorized use. Swift has put this unauthorized use on my DAC report along with saying I cannot be rehired by them which is a signal to other truck companies to not hire me.
