On 5/14/3013, I was informed by a friend that my AOL account was hacked, and that someone sent a message with my name on it requesting funds to fly back to the USA from Manila/Philippines. I changed my password upon receipt of this information, and also sent out an email to everyone in my address book regarding this scam.
I then called PC Experts for assistance in cancelling my AOL account, thinking that they were licensed by AOL to handle problems like this, but I was sadly mistaken. They said that my computer was infected w / a virus which could only be cleared if I agreed to let them fix it. They also said that it would cost $99.95, but the fee would increase if I called a second time.
The technicians were located in India (first names were Ethan and Sam), and they went through a spiel about offering 1 year of free service (which I declined), and after giving them my credit card information, I was told that my AOL account had been cancelled, per my initial request. Needless to say, it was too late to retrieve the payment, but I want everyone to know that this is an insidious company in the business of ripping folks off when they have computer issues.
