Rebates not worth the hassle

I bought a memory stick from the TigerDirect store in Burlington that had a $10 rebate. When I paid for it at the cash register I expressed my concern about obtaining the rebate as I was aware of the problems that others have had. "Don't worry, we'll help you get it if there is a problem", the guy taking my money said. The process was a total waste of time, I entered my details online and chose to take the lower amount to get my money in 2 weeks. All I ever got was a worthless stream of emails purporting to be giving me orogress updates, including an email telling me that a check had been posted when I had requested a Mastercard. After a month or so, I sent an email to the rebate organization telling them that I had received nothing and I received an email thanking me! I contacted TigerDirect who said that they would intercede on my behalf.
All for $10, I couldn't be bothered. I would love to know what happens to these rebates that are correctly submitted but are never received, who is benefiting, who is scamming who? Is the rebate company keeping the rebate?
My primary complaint is with TigerDirect, they know that this is happening, why do they continue to do business with these awful rebate companies? I will never shop at TigerDirect again and I constantly warn people about the rebate fiasco.
