I recently moved to a new state. Prior to moving, I had a job with the same company for nine years, so I had not done a job search in a LONG time.
I was confident that I'd find a new job in no time by using the internet! So, I put profiles and resumes up on Career Builder, Monster, and Hot Jobs.
I really wish that there was better quality control, because a lot of job seekers may not realize that a good chunk of these "companies" who have listings on these sites are scammers.
For example: One job posting listed a job as a receptionist at "a local Nissan dealership." I applied for it, only to later learn that I was not applying directly to a dealership, but to a company called "Dealer Staff", which supposedly places people into jobs with various different car dealerships. I felt very uneasy about this process, so I did not return their phone calls. I later discovered that there are several "consumer complaintss" right here on this site about this particular company.
These sites are chock-FULL of "Work from home! Make $10,000 a week working PART TIME!" scams, too. Again, and I don't mean to be unkind, but there are a LOT of gullible, or just plain unsavvy people out there who don't realize these are scams. And these unscrupulous "employers" post their "listings" in EVERY category, which is extremely annoying to me.
I received several emails from prospective "employers." Out of those, I looked up each company that I'd never heard of and discovered that just about every single one of them was a scam, or at the very least, a shady company.
Another thing that bothers me about these sites is that a lot of the postings are from staffing agencies, and this is not always apparent at first. I know that there are legitimate staffing agencies out there; I have no problem with that. It's just that when I'm applying for a job, I want to know that I'm applying to an agency; not necessarily the employer itself.
Another "complaint" I have is that job postings are often miscategorized. For example, I'll search for an Administrative/Clerical posting, and my search results include postings for "Registered Nurses" or "Auto Mechanics."
My final "gripe" is that despite specifically checking off that I did NOT want to receive email updates from the site, I received a LOT of emails. I even unsubscribed from all three sites and I still get emails from Career Builder.
My advice is, if you are looking for a job, be very cautious when using these sites - don't get taken by a scam artist. Research any company that you've never heard of. And don't solely rely on the internet to find a job. If there is a specific company you'd like to apply for, go directly to their website - you can usually apply that way.
