Last month I bought a domain from Yahoo. I put my name down by initials in the WHOIS for privacy. I do NOT go by my initials.
One week later, I get a toner-phoner type call. For anyone not in the know, a toner-phoner is one of those scam office supply callers who calls businesses as if they are the actual supplier. They say stuff like, "Hi, this is Rob from XYZ Copy. Say, I'm updating my records and I see I don't have a serial number for your copy machine." So the unsuspecting person will give it to him to which he replies, "Great! I tell you what. I can go ahead and send another out to you right now. You know, take care of two birds." And the person will say, "Sure. I guess." And the next thing you know the business is charged $200 for a $100 toner cartridge.
Anyway!
So this dude calls me up. I answer. He say, "Hi, this is Aplus.net. I'm calling about the website. Can I speak to CC?"
CC? I don't go by CC. What website? I just bought the domain.
So I said (I'm at home on my bed. I pretend I'm a business), "Sure. Who's calling please?"
He says "This is the host. I really would like to speak to CC about the website."
Well, before it gets too long, I basically said there WAS no website. What was he talking about? And he finally dropped the act and said he'd like to talk about hosting options. I said I'd like to receive no more calls. He says ok.
Fast forward ONE MONTH. Today, I get the same thing. "This is Aplus.net. I'd like to speak to CC about the website."
I immediately said I don't want anymore calls. Then the guy just cut me off and put me through to the prerecorded sales pitch! Can you believe that s$%#? I guess I can.
So I called their 877 number and asked AGAIN not to be called. The guy SAID he put me in their Do Not Call list. We'll find out if this happens. I'll post again and again and again if they keep calling.
This time i'm going to remember each and every name!
Lastly, a personal note from me to Aplus.net...
Guys. Come on. Cold call telemarketing from the WHOIS? What self-respecting host needs such tacky methods for customers? We all know the most KICK A$ hosting companies have such loyal customers with such RABID word of mouth.
I would NEVER... Ever... Buy internet services from a host OR registrar that resorted to phone calls and snail mail. We ALL know how registrars send out fake "RENEWAL" notices hoping to trick people into switching providers. That's what your WHOIS farming and cold-calling smacks of.
And don't think I haven't noticed the other scams here at RoR that you've pulled on other people who actually DID buy your services.
You stink. I can smell your stench from here. Why would I associate my business with such suck?
