We received a letter from Penrod Counseling Center in Avon on Jan. 4, threatening to send us to collections if we didnt pay $190 by Jan. 12. We had received no bills prior to receiving this letter. I called the business and spoke to Dane Penrod, asking for details as to why we owed that amount. He said that was what our insurance didnt cover, was rude and uncooperative, and hung up on me 3 times.
Upon researching the matter, I found that Penrod had billed our insurance company $55 per session for the 4 sessions we attended there (way back in February and March).insurance had paid $5 per session, leaving our $50 co-pays — $200 total. Our counselor had only charged us a $35 co-pays, so we had already paid $140. I believe we do owe Penrod $60, which we would gladly pay if he would agree to that amount. Mr. Penrod is now claiming that each session cost $70 (although I have proof that our insurance company was only charged $55), and that we cancelled an appointment without 24 hours notice, so we are being billed $70 for that. I explained to him that we didnt cancel the appointment in question, as I specifically remember they called and said the counselor had double booked.
I did report Penrod to the BBB, but he is not willing to budge, and sent them proof that we had cancelled the appointment in the form of a receipt signed by the counselor. The signature is clearly a rubber stamp, and the receipt was not originally made out for a missed appointment, but rather Mr. Penrod has apparently written MISSED APMT at the top of some other form of receipt. I contacted the counselor, who is no longer with the company, and she said she vaguely remembers the double booking incident, but her word would not mean much to Mr. Penrod at this point. She also said they still have her rubber stamp signature, so she is not sure how authentic anything with her signature will be.
