On June 27, I purchased a Yorkie from Tailwaggers in Sayville, NY. I was told the dog had no health problems, because my mother and I were worried how small and skinny the dog looked. The place was flithy, and anyone was allowed to pick up the dogs, however, no sanitation was inforced. The pet store owner gave our dog a year at their vet who I will not name, but this vet is always through Puppy depto and Yuppy puppy.
Within the next day, The dog was coughing and would not eat. I brought the dog to the vet, which he said it was kennel cough. The dog went back every week for a recheck, in which the dog still had a cough. The vet then said it was bronchitis and was similar to mono in Humans. The dog was hospitlaized for a week, in which the Dr allowed us to pick up the dog. The pet store owener was called and was informed the dog was not getting any better. This went on for about 3 months, in which the Vet decided the dog had a collapsing trachea. The pet store owner kept saying the problem stemmed from the dogs sugar.
Since Sept until now, the dog had been fine. Until the week of january 5th, the dog had started to vomit daily and became legtharic. Thursday night, the dog had a seizure which we rushed him to the emergency room. The next morning, we took the dog to the vet, in which we were told the dog had post canine distemper. I found it impossible because the dog was 10th months and had all of his distemper vaccinations. The vet implied that it was in his brain and he would get him better with his herbal remedies. That day, I went home and researched distemper. It had became clear that my dog was going to die with what I was reading. The Vet did not suggest any tests i. E sonograms or xrays.
I decided to get a second opinion. We went to a local vet, in which, they did sonograms of his liver, kidneys, brain and abdomine. The dog was found to have hydrophysiss in his brain (and still has the soft spot like a baby on his head), liver problems, and his kidneys were not properly developed. The dog had congential problems which stemed from birth. This weekend we have spent over 1,000 on our dog.
In conclusion, The pet store owner knew he was sick all along. The dog weighs 3.5 and is 10 months and we purshased him for 1,300. No wonder why he was so cheap. The vet states the owner should have known from his head shape that his brain had not developed correctly. Since the soft spot is easily noticed. However, the Vet did not pick up on any of these things.
Now I am left with a dog who has these problems and will never have a healthy life. The pet store is selling many of these dogs and reciving them from puppy mills. It is disgusting in the store and the owner has the Vet not tell the owners what is wrong witht he dog.
I would advise everyone not to purchase a dog from Tailwaggers in Sayville, or a pet store in general. It is heartbreaking and tapping out our pockets.
