I was hospitalized and diagnosed with vertebral osteomyelitis which is an infection of the C6/C7 (neck area) vertebra at the beginning of this year. The treatment for this condition is intravenous medication for a six week period and if left untreated could lead to bone collapse.
I was given a port under my arm to administer the extremely strong antibiotics needed for my course of treatment which could be done on an out patient basis. Upon release from the hospital I was informed that my insurance company Mega Life & Health would only cover this treatment if I remained in the Hospital! Needless to say I was astonished.
This is a no win situation, based on the average cost of at least $600.00 per day for six week hospital stay of which I am responsible for 20% this is an out of pocket cost to me of $25,000.00 not to mention the cost to the insurance company. This is compared to my out patient cost of $1,100.00 a week.
I have been with Mega Life & Health Insurance Company since October and pay to $12,000.00 a year in health coverage. The extremely strong antibiotics was administered through a port under my arm that went directly to my heart in my bedroom at home (which fortunately my husband learned to do) at an out of pocket cost of $7,200.00... This is a very sad situation considering I have health care!
