I have been volunteering with the Loveland Habitat for Humanity since they opened their doors.
I started in July of that year. Over 10 years. I have enjoyed every minute. I have made friends and work very hard. I brought lunch every week and worked the special public relations events.
But recently, I have become allergic to perfume, or more precisely the preservative in the perfumes, laundry detergent etc. I receive shots and take claritin and I'm fine and have been, for this entire time, performing my regular routine. If it's too stinky, I move away from the area. Problem solved.
However, there are a couple of paid employees that smoke and apply perfume continually all day long to cover up the smell. I have nothing against that, but the repetition makes my skin burn. I have NO problem with shoppers, workers etc. It is the repeated application that I have problem with. I take a claritin and receive shots every 2 weeks so I can tolerate normal applications. I function very well that way. Other employees don't like it either, but they don't say anything because they will fire you as they have with me today. To me, this is totally blown out of proportion.
I simply asked if they could maybe ask these persons to cool it a little.
I asked if there was a day when this particular person is not working. That took 9 months until I went in and asked employees when that was. Habitat would not give me that information. So, we went ahead and scheduled for me to work that day. The next day, I was called and told not to come back because they are concerned about my health. I explained that I signed a release and I would leave, if it bothered me again but they were NOT interested. If they were concerned about health... Paid employees and volunteers, wouldn't the wise thing to do would to eliminate excessive perfume? I have nothing against this person. I like her, I just can't take the repeated applications of perfume. It's that easy. Habitat blew it out of proportion.
I am extremely dissappointed in the way Habitat treats their volunteers, since I'm fired, and for this reason, I am lodging this complaint.
My husband told me, "I wouldn't go back to a place that treated it's volunteer's that way" I said I want to do it for the people who have no home. I don't care about the politics, I just think everyone should have a safe place to call home. But now, they don't want me.
To say that I am going to miss this part of my life for the past 10 years is an understatement.
Thank you for your assistance and attention to this matter, I really would like to volunteer there, but Habitat has chosen not to accept my services.
