New meaning of "universal"

I go to buy a AC adapter for my HP laptop. Package says "fits all national brand laptops". Lo and behold, none of the adapter tips fit.
I call their "tech support" line and they tell me I need a different version (!!) that co-incidentally the retailer (Walmart) doesn't carry.

I asked the support rep if I could just buy the correct tip. She says no, it won't fit my version of the product.
Why call something "universal" when there are 3 different versions? Can't return it as product says not to return it to retailer.
