HDI Simple Escapes renewed the account of my mother two months after she died. We discovered the fraud while going through the routine of closing accounts after her death. The company had collected more than $200 from my elderly mother for providing no service at all.
The HDI Simple Escapes account was set up on automatic monthly payments. The payments had begun in mid at $8.95 a month.in they went to $9.95.in 2004 — you guessed it — $10.95 a month.
When we called the toll free number, the representative was unable to explain what the payments were for. When we noted the increase in price, the representative said the account had been "renewed" at the higher price. We then explained that the account had been "renewed" after my mother's death.
When we finally threatened to call the state attorney general, we were told the entire amount collected over the two years would be refunded.
My mother was an AOL member. From other reports on this web site, I gather AOL may be giving this company credit card numbers, as other victims also have been AOL members. But I have no way to verify this.
We intend to file a complaint with the Pennsylvania AG's office. We were alerted to this fraud by other reports on this web site — consumer complaints.com.
