At the beginning of April I did a refinance on my home and the lending company informed me of an item on my credit report that had shown up. I had no idea what it was for but took the check they provided to pay it off since it was included in my closing cost. I never sent the check but instead did some research and sent for my credit reports.
There was nothing on any of my reports regarding this company. A couple of weeks later I received a bill from the company on behalf of the original company (Fingerhut). I called the number and talked to a gentleman on the phone.
All the person could tell me is when the item was purchased in 1996 through Fingerhut and that they are the collection company for the business that bought out Fingerhut. When I asked for proof that I purchased the item and proof of delivery I was told they did not have the information available.
My complaint is not that I can't pay the bill because technically I already did through the closing cost of my house and now I'm stuck with a check that I can't do anything with. It is the fact that this company can say I owe money for an item I have never ordered or received and they don't have to prove it.
Today I'm still holding onto the check because I know if I had ordered something from them there would be some type of paper trail to go by. And, if I had received it there would also be a tracking history. Not to mention they waited 7 years to notify me of this item. As for the "supposed" item, it sounds like something I would definately remember getting and would most likely use because it is apparently some sort of cooker with geese on it... I'm a cook so I think I would remember.
All I'm asking is for proof of the order by me and proof of delivery to my address for that time period in 1996. Otherwise I will hold this check indefinately regardless, because it is the principle of the matter.
