Scam, loans, Telemarketing, Can't get Rid of These Salespeople, harrasment, don't get involved

In 2009 I requested information from the University of Phoenix (UoP). After I missed a few calls in one day from UoP, I picked up. It was an enrollment representative. Yes, my first impression was the representative was very friendly. The representative/counselor put another representative/counselor on the telephone line. They both asked me questions and confirmed my contact information a couple of times. I wanted to start in the much later but the counselor persuaded me to start soon.

The enrollment counselor urged me to get online ASAP to complete a UoP student enrollment application and apply for loans as FAFSA (Federal Grant Monies) would not cover the cost! I thought that was odd. Due to my status, FAFSA would cover my tuition and materials in full at a local community college. That should have been my first red flag.

What was happening was the UoP Telemarketers were trying to rush me so I could not have time to think about it or question their practices. A common sales tactic. Cults perpetrate tactics like that too.

I did not complete the student enrollment application as it required my debit/credit card and other information! I did not provide this information purposely. However, I applied for a loan at a few lenders.

A day or two later, my FAFSA was processed. I called the UoP enrollment representative. I asked how much would my FAFSA cover. Suddenly, the representative was not too friendly. The representative said the FAFSA will fall short, I need loans and he/she does not handle this. The enrollment counselor told me to contact my financial advisor (Runaround). Then he/she snapped at me because I had not completed my student enrollment application yet. Red flag big time!

A day or two later I notified the enrollment representative through voicemail and email that I would not complete my enrollment and had no intention of doing so. I would not be attending UoP.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) in Arizona, the Attorney General in AZ and other resources are overflowing with complaints about the University of Phoenix (Apollo Group, Axia College, Etc.).

The most stunning complaint is the one from the Ex-employee from UoP.

The UoP has been sued by many groups and have lost millions of dollars.

I contacted my potential loan lenders and cancelled all the loan applications. I alerted them about the bad history of the UoP. They were not surprised. They heard many complaints. I deleted UoP off my FAFSA application and contacted FAFSA directly to ensure that UoP would not receive monies illegally.

I received at least three phone calls the day after I notified the enrollment counselor of my intentions not to enroll or complete the enrollment process.

I contacted the BBB is Arizona, the Arizona Attorney General's Office and a couple of other helpful resources. I was told I will receive numerous calls from the UoP trying to convince me I owe them money even though I never enrolled. I was warned they use illegal scare tactics. I was told to ignore the calls/emails/correspondence but to document all harassment communications from the UoP. They explained I did not have to be a victim. If you had anything to do with the UoP you will need to tell your employer and references to document the harassment too.

Bottom line is do not have anything to do with the UoP. It is really just a high pressured telemarketing scam to bilk any potential student out of as much money as they can get.instead, go to your local community college.

Here are some resources to help you if you have had anything to do with the UoP.
