Rec'd a letter from Greenway Trust, Inc. AND a check in the amount of $4,980. Whoa... Alot of money there. Somehow, they randomly selected me from a Readers Digest and Publishing Clearing House data base.
I called the number on the letter 1-289-892-4026. I asked for Tony Young or Heather Snow. I guess I got Tony, but he and said that I should call him back in 10 minutes. Fine... I waited 15. I called back and he told me the following after giving him a Claim# on the letter:
1. He activated the check. Okay to cash.
2. Take out $3,150 and send it via Western Union or Money Gram to them (but really, he gave me a woman's name and address in Brooklyn, NY)
3.in about 3-5 days, I will get the rest of the money, which is about $35,850
Sounded simple enough. He even told me to verify the amount by calling the printed 888 number on the check of the bank. I thanked him and told him I will do this right away.
I'm no dummy! While we were on the phone, I was looking them up ONLINE! Omg! So many scams that sound just like it but with different company names. Finally, I came up with an idea. Why not call the bank themselves, but not the bank number printed on the check, so I google'd the bank, which was 1st Advantage Federal Credit Union, and found out their REAL contact number. When I got them on the line, I told them I don't have an acct with them, I don't live anywhere close to them, but I got a check with their logo, their PO Box address and probably going to draw from one of their customer accounts. Sure enough, the lady on the other line said thank you since it would have been drawn fraudulently from another account. She also gave me the number to their fraud dept. How SAD! If I did cash it, I would have been part of this disgusting scam!!!
What else should I do? I want to alert more people!
