Career Education's American InterContinental University Placed on One-Year Probation
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP) — Career Education Corp., a for-profit college company, said Tuesday that a regional accrediting panel has placed the company's American InterContinental University on a one-year probation.
The company, whose schools offer degrees ranging from the associate to doctoral level, said the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools placed AIU on probation, but the company didn't say why.
A spokesperson for Career Education couldn't immediately be reached.
"We are committed to addressing the Commission's concerns while continuing to provide quality education to our students, " AIU Chief Executive George Miller said in a statement.
The company's shares fell $3.42, or 8.8 percent, to $35.42 in midday trading on the Nasdaq.
AIU has campuses across the United States, including in Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It also has campuses in London and Dubai.
Career Education Chairman and Chief Executive John Larson said in a statement that the company is "confident in American InterContinental University and its commitment to quality education and to the significant educational benefits provided to all of their students."
