On Saturday, Nov. 12th I received a call on my cellphone. I thought it was rather strange the the caller id only showed a six digit #. 001-819, to be exact. I had seen this # recently but had always missed the call. I figured let me see what this is about. A woman with a very heavy accent was on the other end and she began to tell me how she was with Advantage America and since I was so good at paying my taxes on time I was entitled to a grant of $12,000.00 from the federal govenment.
When I questioned her about how she got my phone # she told me it was on the return I filed. Of course I knew this was bogus as no phone is put on a tax return and I certainly wouldn't put my cell phone # on one. She told me the money would be wired to my checking account for a 1 time fee of $49.95.
I asked her if the $49.95 could be deducted from the $12,000.00 and a check be sent to me since I don't like giving my bank info out. She told me "no". The money had to be wired in and the fee had to be wired out. I told her I couldn't hear her and to give me a phone# that I could call her back at in case we got cut off. She gave me a # which I later learned was not a legitimate #. I told her that before I would give her my bank info I was going to call the i.R.S. To make sure this was for real. (i knew it wasn't but I wanted to see her reaction) She became very nasty and started verbally abusing me and threatening me with physical harm. I found this quite amusing.
Since Saturday, these people have called me at least 16 times. The last time they called I gave them the same thing they gave me a load of bull. All the information I gave them was wrong. The wrong bank, the wrong account # but the right aba # for the bank I gave them. I told the man I spoke to at Advantage America that I was calling Peter Harvey the Attorney General in NJ and file a complaint against them. He immediately
hung up.
These people need to be stopped. If anyone calls you from anywhere promising you money and asking for any kind of bank information. Do not give it to them. I believe this fraud is being perpetrated from out of the county. I checked with 411 and guess what? There's no such business at the address they give. I have called the local newspapers, the news channels in ny and the internal revenue office to let them know what these people are doing. Please tell everyone you know about this so it doesn't happen to some unsuspecting person.
