I repeatedly requested Texaco Shell to NOT increase the credit limit on my shell card, but they consistently raised it to cover the charges incurred by a third party.
When I found they would not respond to phone, fax, email and written requests not to raise the limit that I would be obligated for, I called their customer service line. The option to report the card lost or stolen is automatic on their voicemail system. I used this option, and foolishly did not follow it up with a registered letter.
However, there is no advisement by Texaco/Shell to follow up with a letter on the automated card cancellation option of the phone tree. So, a month later I get another statement, now they've allowed the card to be used for $400 worth of purchases above the credit limit and when I called customer service to inform them that I would not be responsible for any charges after the date I called, they claim they never got a call from me, and that I am responsible.
I very much suspect that these are examples of extortion tactics on the part of Texaco/Shell concerning lost and stolen cards and the management of credit limits. I will never do business with this crooked company again.
