FACTS
"This is a valid complaint!!! I purchased a siamese kitten (Bao) from mi cattery on 10-31-04. The day after I brought him home, he started sneezing and coughing. 2 days later I brought him to my local vet, who told me he had URI. Within a week, my older Balinese (12 yrs. Old) became infected in her eyes. I was then told that it was Herpes virus and that she was infected by the kitten and would have to be medicated for life. Now, kitten has been infected in his eyes. Have been to numerous vets... My local vet who is O& Animal Hospital in Southampton, (Dr. A&), Dr. G — , Vetinary Opthomologist in Westbury, N.Y., and finally Dr. When in Westhampton, NY. (These cats will be infected forever and, in addition, I no longer can have a life because every day revolves around meds. MoJo, the Balinese, gets 3 meds 6x/day. Bao, the kitten, gets meds 2x/day.

Expenses are more than I can handle. I have all of the bills necessary for this application. But, I have no idea what future bills could be because Herpes will never end. My kitten was infected with herpes virus from the breeder and brought it home to MoJo, who was perfectly healthy for her entire life. So far, I have spent at least $2,500 on vets and meds. I've no way to estimate what the future bills will be. Meds will be constant as will vet visits.

Response from Honey Walker 4/21/05

"I have tried to maintain a verbal communication with Karen Solomon since her purchase. Her first few e-mails indicated that she was extremely happy with her purchase. When she advised me of her kittens' eye problem, (at least a month after purchase), I told her to bring the kitten to the vet and send me the bill. (She indicated that this was now an ongoing problem that started when she first purchased the kitten). She did not respond or reply. About a month later I contacted her again to check the kittens condition and again I received to reply. I sent her a check in the amount of $200.00 and advised her that I was willing to pay her vet fees up to the full purchase price if the kitten. Again, there was no response. I am of the opinion that she would rather soil my reputation than resolve this matter.

I will tell you the same thing I told her. Send me vet bills indicating amounts in excess of the purchase price and I will send her a refund up to that purchase price. That is what New York State law requires and that is what I will do. Also, if I may add my two cents worth. If this kitten was so sick from the date of purchase why did she not return it then. And to continue, there is no cure for the herpes virus. Drops and ointments are preventative against bacterial infections that could manifest due to the herpes virus, but only when the virus is active. This virus, like its' human counterpart, is activated by "STRESS". For all I know her other cat could have had this virus latent and it manifested to active due to the introduction of the new kitten.

I see no reason to accept the blame for this but am still willing to reimburse her up to the purchase price of the kitten because I feel my reputation is far more important than the cost of the kitten. She has made no effort to settle matters, she just keeps on complaining to anyone that will listen. As for ruining her life... Well I think that is a little extreme.

"I personally know little about the herpes virus. After the incident with the Karen Solomon kitten I did some research and found many contradicting stories. The virus can be caught from another cat or kitten. I do not know if it can live for any length of time without a host and I have not found any one that could tell me for sure. I understand it is highly contagious. I do not know exactly what it is and I do not know the extent of the damage it can cause. Most of the information I have received indicates that it can be latent for days, weeks, months or even years and then something stressful happens and there is an outbreak.

The link you sent me, which I have seen before, pretty much says it all. I tried to digest information from many sources and basically it comes down to any sneeze or runny eye can be herpes but usually it goes away in a week or so, unless there is stress, then it keeps recurring.

I am not a vet and I have never had a cat with Herpes to my knowledge. However, if it is latent in one of my cats, I would like to think it would have surfaced before now. But again, if it is latent and my cats are all inoculated why would I suspect it of being in the Cattery. As a matter of fact, the FVRCP that the kittens are given is supposed to immunize against it." Written by Honey Walker who states on her site she has been a breeder for 35 years and knows very little about herpes virus, how can that be?
