I was victimized by Scott Koppenhafer in 1997 but didn't realize until recently, he was still ripping off others. My story is very much the same as every other complaint reported. Scott was hired to do major remodeling consisting of new kitchen, bath, windows, doors, siding and roofing. He did all of the demolition while receiving weekly payments. Big mistake. This enabled him to invest little while receiving money.
At the point he would've had to begin using the money already paid him to purchase materials, he ran out leaving a gutted house, tarp on the unfinished roof, no heat with winter approaching and poor workmanship. It cost us $30,000 to complete the job with much having to be redone.
After receiving a letter from him stating he was filing bankruptcy and would not be finishing the job, we began contacting government agencies for help. Albany County DA. No help. Civil matter. Filed a complaint with the NYS Attorney General which resulted in a $4000 fine to Scott for violations but no restitutions for us. Told more complaints needed to proceed further. Paid to file complaint with BBB. Contact BBB and no complaints filed against Scott. BBB is useless.
Advised by an attorney not to proceed with legal action because it would be costly with little results. He would most likely be found guilty but we would've had to chase him for money.
If our laws won't stop Scott maybe the media can. How many more victims are out there??? We should all join forces in the fight to STOP SCOTT KOPPENHAFER. He gets many of his work from Home Shows. Attend the shows and approach potential victims after they leave Scott's booth. We did for several years. He really becomes uneasy when he recognizes you.
