Brown Family Communities
Ripoff shoddy construction and no compensation to homeowners

Decided to buy a newly constructed home last summer and contracted the build with Brown Family Communities. Finally were able to move in in February. We noticed right away that there was a strange odor in the house. We were assured it was the carpeting that had been warehoused prior to install and that it would be cleaned and so it was, but no remedy to the smell. Of note, I was 40 weeks pregnant when we moved in.

The next day we were moving because I could go into labor at anytime. The smell remained.

We called the customer service rep and they said, "it's the plumbing". The plumber came out and said "nope, not the plumbing". Now it's been almost a week and still this putred and I mean disgusting smell in out master bedroom and bath. We have to burn candles around the clock just to tolerate it. And we can STILL smell it. My husband I both vomited the first time we took a shower in our new home because the smell was so bad.

A week to the day after move in, we had our son and brought him home 24 hours later. Now I have people in and out of my home trying to figure out what the smell is. Is it the stain on the cabinets, is it the ductwork, is it something trapped in the wall? Getting warmer.
We kept telling them, it smells like a rotting animal. We hear, "No, it's not that."

Four days after delivering our son, I decided it was time for a bath because they had sprayed some deodorizer in the shower drain and with the candles the smell was abated enough I could enter the bathroom without vomiting. I soaked in the bath for less than 20 minutes and became dizzy, nauseated, and began vomiting uncontrollably and having explosive diarrhea.

I thought maybe it was something related to my recent delivery. I called the OB on call and he said, "no, sounds like some sort of toxic poisoning (food poisoning, virus, etc)" Got something for the nausea then spiked a temp of 104 and kept it for 2 days. And during those 2 days there were STILL people coming in and out of my home trying to discern what this smell was.

I tell the lady that the smell is making me sick. She says, "go sleep in the guest bedroom" This is my home, my NEW home, I do not even have the energy to nurse my son, didn't leave the bed for 2 days and all I get is go sleep in the guest bedroom?

My illness subsided and I finally had full strength about a week later. Still no answer to the smell, of course, after the deodorizer was sprayed the smell was less and the customer service rep even told me, "You're just imagining the smell now" and closed the repair requisition.

Finally, the superintendent came out THREE WEEKS after the first report of the smell and took a chance and knocked a hole out of our exterior wall of the master bath and what he found is truly appauling. A rotting cat carcass trapped under out master bath tub. So then the "haz mat" people had to come out and spray. All I got for all the hassle and aggravation and inconvenience was "sorry, these things happen."

Then to top it off, once I'm up and about unpacking and cleaning the house, I find NUMEROUS defects in the construction. I could list them but it is really redundant. Some of the major ones were that none of the stucco on the outside had "taken" and we had to have the entire house resprayed, there is not a wall in the whole house that is "plum" (putting up walls in not a perfect science, I was told), the concrete on the walkway in front and the patio in back were chipped, two windows that were not well fitted, linoleum peeling up from the wall, the shower was not sealed and leaked everywhere, the fence was not even attached to the house on the side, etc.

And now after five months of having people in and out of my home on an almost weekly basis, I have found more peeling linoleum, sheetrock is falling from the ceiling, and the sink in the garage has come loose from the wall. I am so fed up with all of this! I have called the customer service supervisor twice without a call back.

Oh, and the yard out front died because we closed in February so it was set to water 4 days a week. We did not get the keys to the irrigation system box until this week (five months later). So now it's July and four days a week does not sustain a yard in Phoenix in July. And the icing on the cake. Is that the landscaping sub-contracted with Brown was at my neighbors house slandering me for not cutting my grass. Hello! The grass is DEAD! There's nothing to cut!

So, I'm thinking about posting a seperate ripoff report for them concerning their unprofessional behavior of slandering me to my neighbor.

Everytime I call customer service I get the attitude that they are doing me a "favor" for coming out and fixing what should have been done correctly in the first place!
Please, do NOT buy a Brown Family Communities Home.
