Marathon gas station problems: who to contact (checked October 18, 2026)

Pages opened on October 18, 2026: the MPC Contact page, the Marathon brand site (Contact Us, FAQs, About Us), the Form 10-K for 2025, and BBB.

1. Know who runs the station. MPC's 10-K for 2025 says it sells refined products 'to independent entrepreneurs who operate primarily Marathon® branded outlets'. A cashier, pump, price or in-store dispute at a Marathon station therefore usually involves the station's own operator. The Marathon contact form says: 'All Marathon stations are independently owned and operated', and the Marathon FAQ says Marathon brand fuel is available through retail outlets 'predominantly owned and operated by independent entrepreneurs'. MPC sold its own company-operated Speedway chain to 7-Eleven, Inc. on May 14, 2021 (10-K), so Speedway stores are no longer run by MPC.

2. Marathon brand customer service. MPC's Contact page lists 'Brand Station Customer Service', which leads to the Marathon brand contact form. Its topic list reads: Bank hold, Request receipt, Fuel Quality Claim, REWARDS, Station experience, Station Employment, Other. The form asks for name, email and phone.

Bank hold. The form's Bank hold text says: 'Marathon stations are not responsible for placing or removing pending holds. Please contact your financial institution if the charge is posted to your account.' It also says: 'Your financial institution may hold funds that exceed your purchase amount when using your payment card.' The Request receipt topic asks for date of sale, last 4 digits of the card, total sale amount and station location.

Fuel Quality Claim. The form asks for date of purchase, fuel grade, payment method, what happened immediately after fueling, year, make and model of the vehicle, mileage, whether the vehicle had to be towed, the name and phone number of the dealership or repair shop, whether the issue was reported to the station, station address, and date and time of the incident. The form says that stations 'are responsible for maintaining the quality of the fuel at their station' (company statement).

3. Marathon Rewards. The Marathon Rewards page says 'Earn at least 5¢ in Rewards on every gallon' and 'Earn at least $6 in Rewards when you join'; the FAQ says rewards are earned at $0.05 per gallon of Marathon fuel at participating locations, and other promotions have their own terms. For a wrong rewards amount the FAQ for a wrong rewards amount, directs customers to Marathon Rewards Support at 1-855-920-3988 or to email a clear photo of the receipt, with the mobile phone number, to [email protected].

Gift cards. The Marathon Gift Cards page says cards 'are available for purchase online' and 'are not redeemable for cash, lottery, money orders, or additional Gift Cards'. In the pages checked on October 18, 2026 no dedicated gift-card support contact was found. The most recent complaint on the BBB profile (March 26, 2026) concerns online gift cards, and the business response shown on BBB says it passed the information to its gift card vendor.

4. Corporate. Headquarters: 539 South Main Street, Findlay, OH 45840, +1 419.422.2121 (MPC Contact page).

5. If the station does not resolve a pump or card problem. Keep the receipt, pump number, date, time and amount, and ask your card issuer about any dispute rights. State attorneys general and state or local weights-and-measures offices handle fuel-dispensing and pricing complaints; their procedures were not checked for this page.

Environmental enforcement matters in MPC's 10-K (not consumer-station matters)

The following are quoted from MPC's Form 10-K for 2025 (filed 2026-02-26), Item 3, and concern refineries and pipelines, not Marathon-brand stations. The filing says MPC uses a $1 million threshold for disclosing environmental proceedings. It also says that while an adverse result in one or more proceedings 'could be material', the company believes the proceedings, individually or in the aggregate, will not have a material adverse effect (company position).

  • Illinois pipeline release. In March 2022 the State of Illinois brought an action in Madison County Circuit Court against Marathon Pipe Line LLC, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of MPLX, over a crude oil release on the Wood River to Patoka 22-inch line near Edwardsville. In September 2023 the U.S. Department of Justice and EPA confirmed they would pursue federal enforcement for alleged Clean Water Act violations from that incident and three other pipeline incidents in Illinois and Indiana (2018, 2020, 2021). The filing says the company cannot estimate timing of resolution.
  • Refinery benzene waste and wastewater rules. EPA Region 6 issued a Notice of Violation (December 18, 2023) for the Garyville refinery and EPA Region 5 a Finding of Violation (January 10, 2024) for St. Paul Park, alleging violations of 40 C.F.R. Part 61 Subpart FF and Part 60 Subpart QQQ; EPA also inspected the Anacortes refinery. The filing says it cannot estimate any civil penalty.
  • Flares consent decree. MPC entered a 2012 consent decree with EPA on flares at six refineries (modified September 15, 2016) and asked to terminate it on December 20, 2023; the filing says EPA may seek stipulated penalties as a condition of termination, possibly $1 million or more.
  • Washington. On August 4, 2025 the Washington Department of Ecology began an enforcement action against Tesoro Refining & Marketing Company LLC, a subsidiary, under the Washington Hazardous Waste Management Act; the filing says resolution was being finalized.
  • Galveston Bay Refinery consent decree (Form 10-Q for Q2 2026, filed 2026-08-04). The 10-Q says the refinery is subject to a consent decree with EPA and that EPA assessed stipulated penalties in the second quarter of 2026 for alleged violations of the consent decree occurring from 2020 through 2024. The company says resolution of the demand may result in a payment of $1 million or more and that it does not believe any stipulated penalties will have a material impact. No amount is disclosed.

Other matters: the 10-K for 2025 described climate-change lawsuits by governmental entities in Delaware, Maryland and Oregon; the 10-Q filed 2026-08-04 says MPC is currently subject to such a proceeding in Delaware, Delaware ex rel. Jennings v. BP America Inc., et al. (Del. Super. Ct., instituted September 10, 2020), and does not say what happened to the other cases. The lawsuits allege misrepresentation about petroleum products' impacts and seek unspecified damages and abatement; a July 2020 Bureau of Indian Affairs trespass notification to Tesoro High Plains Pipeline (about $187 million assessed, about $4 million paid after appeal, later BIA orders and a lawsuit in the District of North Dakota); and litigation over the Dakota Access Pipeline's federal permits, in which MPLX holds a 9.19 percent indirect interest in the joint venture (the 10-K says the pipeline is or may be subject to litigation seeking a permanent shutdown). These are allegations or pending proceedings, not findings.

Who Marathon Petroleum is and how Marathon-brand stations work

Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: MPC) is headquartered at 539 South Main Street, Findlay, Ohio. Its 10-K for 2025 says it was formed through the spinoff of Marathon Oil Corporation's refining, marketing and transportation business, approved on May 25, 2011, with MPC stock distributed to Marathon Oil stockholders on June 30, 2011, and that it acquired Andeavor in 2018. Marathon Oil is a different company from MPC; the 10-K describes MPC as formed from Marathon Oil's former refining, marketing and transportation business. The Marathon brand site says the company traces its history to The Ohio Oil Company, founded in Lima, Ohio in 1887 (company statement).

Segments. The 10-K describes a Refining & Marketing segment, which sells to wholesale customers, spot buyers, 'independent entrepreneurs who operate primarily Marathon® branded outlets' and direct dealers mainly under the ARCO® brand, and a Midstream segment run largely through MPLX LP. The Marathon site says MPC owns the general partner and majority limited partner interest in MPLX.

Station counts (separately attributed). The 10-K says that as of December 31, 2025 there were 7,882 brand jobber outlets in 40 states, the District of Columbia and Mexico where independent entrepreneurs primarily maintain Marathon-branded outlets (the outlet table covers Marathon and ARCO brands as well as Shell, Mobil, Tesoro and other brands), and lists 1,162 ARCO direct-dealer locations. The Marathon FAQ says 'There are over 6,000 Marathon stations'. These figures are from different sources and are not combined.

Speedway. The 10-K says MPC completed the sale of Speedway, LLC, its company-owned and operated retail fuel and convenience store business, to 7-Eleven, Inc. on May 14, 2021 for cash proceeds of $21.38 billion. Complaints on this site about Speedway stores that predate or follow that date concern a separate business and are not linked to this page.

Complaints and review counts

This site. One complaint in our archive names Marathon Petroleum as the offender (2011, a cashier and change dispute at a Marathon-branded station in Farmington Hills, Michigan, listing marathonpetroleum.com). Four further complaints (2004 and 2012) concern gas stations named only 'Marathon gas station' and are listed as brand mentions rather than as complaints about MPC itself. They are individual reader accounts, not findings.

BBB, as displayed on October 18, 2026. BBB profile for Marathon Petroleum Corporation, Findlay, OH: not BBB accredited, rating A+, 6 total complaints in the last 3 years and 1 filed in the last 12 months. BBB lists other Marathon Petroleum entries (refinery divisions, individual stations) as separate profiles.

Trustpilot, as displayed on October 18, 2026. Trustpilot page for marathonpetroleum.com: 8 reviews, score 2.2, unclaimed profile; Trustpilot says it does not fact-check reviews. With so few reviews this is not a representative measure.

Is Marathon Petroleum Legitimate?

Marathon Petroleum Corporation files annual and quarterly reports with the SEC (Form 10-K for 2025 filed 2026-02-26; Form 10-Q filed 2026-08-04), lists headquarters at 539 South Main Street, Findlay, Ohio, and is listed on the NYSE as MPC.
