BP

BP p.l.c. is the parent of the bp brand that, by its own account, runs more than 8,500 gas stations and travel centers in the U.S., two refineries and offshore production. This page gives bp's own complaint form for gas stations and rewards, the Justice Department and Chemical Safety Board records on Deepwater Horizon and Texas City, BBB and Trustpilot pages, and 45 archive posts from 2000 to 2013, most about pump prices and fuel quality.

BP: gas station pump prices, bad gas, rewards and where to complain (checked October 16, 2026)

Most people searching this page have a problem at a BP-branded gas station: a pump price that differs from the sign, a cash-versus-credit price dispute, a fill-up that was followed by engine trouble, or a rewards or gift-card question. The older posts in our archive are mostly of this kind.

Company channel. bp's U.S. contact page has a section headed 'Questions, comments, or complaints about our gas stations, rewards, and offers' that leads to a contact form: bp gas station, rewards and offers form. As displayed on October 16, 2026, the form's topic list reads: earnify™, bp rewards Visa, bp Gift Card, Station experience, Fuel quality claim, Other. For bad gas, the 'Fuel quality claim' topic asks for full name, email, phone, site location, date of incident, time of incident and additional details. For price or staff problems, 'Station experience' asks for the same items with the station address. The 'bp Gift Card' topic says 'For further assistance, please call 800-519-3560'. The 'bp rewards Visa' topic says 'For questions regarding your bp rewards Visa Credit Card, please call 1-888-397-1520' and names no issuing bank. The same page lists a separate 'bp pulse support' line for EV charging (833-277-8573, [email protected]) and says that bp America media affairs 'can only answer inquiries from media professionals'.

Who runs the station. bp says its U.S. retail network 'includes bp, Amoco, ampm, Thorntons and TravelCenters of America' and counts 'more than 8,500 gas stations and travel centers across 46 states'. The pages we opened do not say how many of those sites are company-operated and how many are run by independent owners. One complainant in our archive (post 477167) wrote that BP told them a station is run by an independent owner; that is the complainant's account, not a bp statement we verified. Before writing, check the name on the receipt and the sign at the station, and keep the receipt, pump number, date and time.

Other routes. A pump that appears to dispense the wrong amount or a posted price that differs from the price charged can also be raised with the state or county weights-and-measures office (general guidance; we did not open a specific agency page for this); the station's address and the receipt are what such an office would need. For a card charge you do not recognise, your card issuer's dispute process applies.

Government actions involving BP (U.S. Department of Justice, Chemical Safety Board)

Deepwater Horizon (2010). The Department of Justice press release dated October 5, 2015 describes a settlement with BP and the five Gulf states. It says the April 20, 2010 Macondo well blowout destroyed the Deepwater Horizon rig, killed 11 men, and sent more than three million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. It states that BP must pay, under a consent decree lodged in federal court in New Orleans, a $5.5 billion Clean Water Act penalty, $8.1 billion in natural resource damages and $600 million for other claims, and that BP had separate agreements to pay $4.9 billion to the five Gulf states and up to $1 billion to local governments; DOJ gives the total value of the civil resolution as $20.8 billion.

The same release says that on January 29, 2013 BP Exploration and Production Inc. pleaded guilty to illegal conduct leading to and after the disaster and was sentenced to pay $4 billion in criminal fines, penalties and restitution. It also says the United States proved at the civil trial 'among other things, that the spill was caused by BP's gross negligence'. Pretrial Order No. 62 in MDL 2179 (E.D. La., filed January 4, 2017) states: 'On April 4, 2016, this Court entered a Consent Decree (Rec. Doc. 16093) and a Final Judgment (Rec. Doc. 16095)' resolving all claims between BP Exploration & Production Inc., BP America Production Company and BP America Inc., the United States and the five Gulf states.

Texas City refinery (2005). The U.S. Chemical Safety Board page says a series of explosions at the BP Texas City refinery on March 23, 2005 killed 15 workers and injured 180 others, and that the Board approved its final report by a vote of 5-0 on March 20, 2007. The CSB is an investigative body; its report is not a court judgment.

BP p.l.c. and its U.S. businesses

The bp U.S. website carries the footer 'BP p.l.c.' and describes bp US as 'bp US and its subsidiaries and affiliates, if any'. Its U.S. contact page gives 501 Westlake Park Blvd., Houston, Texas 77079 as the address of bp America media affairs. In the U.S., bp describes two major refineries, pipelines and terminals, a trading operation and a retail network of bp, Amoco, ampm, Thorntons and TravelCenters of America sites. The company also runs EV charging under the name bp pulse.

The DOJ release names BP Corporation North America Inc. and BP P.L.C. as providers of parent company guarantees for the Deepwater Horizon payments and the defendant in the criminal case as BP Exploration and Production Inc. A complaint about a single gas station is a different matter from these corporate events, and the entity that operates a given station can differ from BP p.l.c.

What our archive and outside profiles show

This page links 45 archive posts dated 2000 to 2013 that name BP, BP Gas Station, BP Amoco or British Petroleum as the offender. They are consumer accounts, not findings. By keyword match, about 13 mention fuel quality or engine trouble after a fill-up, about 37 mention pump prices, charges or pump accuracy, and about 23 mention staff or service (a post can fall in more than one group). Posts about the BP-branded credit card issued through a bank, about look-alike lottery e-mails that used the BP name, and about unrelated businesses with the initials BP are not linked here.

BBB (as displayed on 2026-10-16). The BBB profile for BP Products North America Inc (Convenience Store, PO Box 6038, Artesia, CA) shows a C+ rating with the reason 'Failure to respond to 1 complaint(s) filed against business', is marked not BBB Accredited, and displays no complaint or review counts. A BBB search for 'BP America' also returns many entries named 'BP Corporate North America, Inc.' with an A+ rating; they lead to a BBB file for Corpay, a fleet-card company, which lists that name among its alternate names, so that rating is not shown here as a rating of the bp gas station business. Trustpilot (as displayed on 2026-10-16). The page for www.bp.com is an unclaimed profile with 770 reviews and a score of 1.9; it is a global profile, not specific to the U.S. See the outside-profile entries for dates and details.

Court records: Deepwater Horizon civil case

The DOJ release says the federal civil lawsuit was announced on December 15, 2010 and that the consent decree was lodged on October 5, 2015 in federal court in New Orleans, with a 60-day public comment period. It was entered on April 4, 2016. The court's Pretrial Order No. 62 says the Consent Decree and a Final Judgment were entered on April 4, 2016 (see the case entry below). Class actions by individuals and businesses, and later proceedings, were not reviewed for this page.

Is BP Legitimate?

BP p.l.c. is the parent named in bp's own U.S. website footer, and its Houston address and a gas station complaint form are published on bp's own contact page. Whether a specific station is run by bp or by an independent owner is not stated on the pages we opened. Government actions described above are for specific events (Deepwater Horizon, Texas City) and are not about gas station pricing. This page offers no rating of BP.
