Belk returns, refunds, gift cards, Belk Rewards credit card and how to complain: what Belk's own pages say (checked October 6, 2026)
This section sets out what Belk's own pages said when opened on October 6, 2026. The 11 older posts on this site that name Belk as the subject are dated 2002 to 2012, so today's rules may differ from the ones those authors describe.
Returns. Belk's Returns & Refunds page says Belk "gladly accept[s] most returns by mail and in stores within 30 days of purchase," that items must be "in original, saleable condition with original tags," that "Shipping and delivery fees are non-refundable," and that "Carrier return shipping fees are $12.95 unless otherwise stated." Items bought in a Belk store, and most items bought on belk.com, can be returned to a Belk store; Belk Outlet and Belk Market locations "do not accept returns from Belk stores or belk.com purchases." The page lists exceptions: special-occasion dresses, swimwear, designer sunglasses and fine jewelry must be returned with a receipt, packing slip or order confirmation email; items from What Goes Around Comes Around, Two Authenticators Inc and FASHIONPHILE Wholesale, Swiss Crown Rolex watches and merchandise with a price ending in $.94 are final sale; and area rugs, furniture, Christmas trees, mattresses, air mattresses, outdoor grills, candy and food, window treatments, curtains and blinds and all Marketplace items bought on belk.com cannot be returned in stores.
Refunds. The same page says "Most credits are posted to your personal credit card or Belk Rewards credit card within 15 business days from the time that your returned merchandise is received" and, if there is no credit after 15 business days, to call Customer Service at (980) 447-5442.
Changing or cancelling an online order. Belk's Orders FAQ says "You have 15 minutes to change or cancel your shipping orders" and that Buy Online, Pick Up In Store and Same-Day Delivery orders "are not eligible for a grace period." On when the card is charged, the same FAQ says "Your card will be charged at the moment the shipment is picked up by the carrier." For an On-Demand Gift Card it says the card cannot be returned or cancelled once activated.
Gift cards. Belk's Gift Card and Promotional Card Terms (published within its Terms of Use) say the cards are issued by Belk Gift Card Company LLC, that Gift Cards "do not expire" and carry no inactivity or service fees, that "No refunds are permitted for purchases of Gift Cards," that "Lost, stolen or damaged Cards will not be replaced or credited to any account," that the cards "cannot be used to pay on your Belk charge account," that "Cards that have been used without Cardholder's authorization will not be replaced," and that Promotional Cards "may contain expiration dates." The balance line given in the terms is 1-800-474-6102.
Belk Rewards credit card and points. Belk's rewards page says the Belk Rewards Mastercard "is issued by Synchrony Bank pursuant to a license by Mastercard International Incorporated." Belk's customer-service page gives the Belk Rewards credit card line as 800-669-6550 (Monday to Saturday, 8:30AM to 7PM Eastern), and its FAQ tells cardholders with missing rewards to contact Synchrony Customer Service at that number. The FAQ also says "All Belk Rewards+ Points expire after an account has had no qualifying purchases for twelve (12) consecutive months." Two Belk pages describe the program differently: the rewards page (as retrieved on October 6, 2026) lists 3, 5 and 7 points per $1 for the Insider ($0-$499.99 yearly spend), Premier ($500-$999.99) and Elite ($1,000+) tiers, while the FAQ says Insiders earn 4 points per dollar, Premier cardholders 5 and Elite 7, and that Premier needs $300 of yearly spend. The same rewards page, in the version retrieved on October 6, 2026, describes Mastercard earning of 3 points per $1 for dining, 2 for grocery and 1 everywhere else. Check the current terms on your own card account before relying on either page.
Customer Service hours. Belk's Customer Service page gives (980) 447-5442 with hours of Monday to Friday 8AM to 8PM and Saturday to Sunday 10AM to 7PM Eastern in one place and Monday to Friday 9AM to 7PM in another block of the same page.
If the problem is not resolved. Belk's Terms of Use (updated as of September 15, 2022) say a customer with a dispute must first send written notice by certified mail to 2801 West Tyvola Road, Charlotte, NC 28217, Attn: General Counsel, or as a signed PDF to [email protected], and that neither side may start arbitration or a court case until 60 days after that notice. The terms then provide for binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association or small claims court, a class action waiver and a jury trial waiver. For an error on a Synchrony-issued Belk card statement, the CFPB's guidance says to send written notice "no later than 60 days after the credit card company sent the statement where the error first appeared" and that the address for billing disputes "may be different from the address where you send your payments", so the address and instructions printed on the statement are the ones to use; that CFPB guidance is separate from the Belk Terms of Use dispute notice above. Outside Belk, the North Carolina Department of Justice takes consumer complaints through the form at ncdoj.gov/file-a-complaint (consumer line (919) 716-6000), and problems with the credit card account itself can be filed with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint (855) 411-2372.
Belk regulator filings and notices
No federal or state enforcement order against Belk, Inc. was identified in the sources checked on October 6, 2026 (the sources searched are listed in the source note). The regulator-related item found is Belk's own breach notification:
- May 2025 cyber incident (breach notice to the New Hampshire Attorney General). In a letter dated June 5, 2025 sent by counsel for Belk to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Consumer Protection and Antitrust Bureau, Belk said it "was the victim of a cyber incident in which an unauthorized third party gained access to certain corporate systems and data between May 7-11, 2025," that it discovered the incident on May 8, 2025, and that the third party "obtained certain internal documents related to Belk." The letter reported that one New Hampshire resident's name and Social Security number were involved, that Belk "alerted and cooperated with law enforcement," and that it offered 12 months of Epiq Privacy Solutions ID credit monitoring (credit monitoring, dark web monitoring, identity restoration and up to $1 million identity theft insurance). The sample individual notice in the letter says the investigation of the potentially affected data was ongoing and that the type of data involved is listed per person. The letter does not state how many people nationwide were notified. Nothing in the letter says who carried out the attack.
The filing is a company notice, not a finding by a regulator. See the litigation section for court filings that followed.
About Belk, Inc.: who operates Belk stores and belk.com
Who runs Belk. Belk's Terms of Use identify the operator as Belk, Inc., "along with its subsidiaries," and say the platforms are "controlled and operated by Belk from its offices in Charlotte, North Carolina." The site footer reads "© 2026 Belk, Inc. & Belk eCommerce LLC." Belk's headquarters address in its own legal notices is 2801 W Tyvola Rd, Charlotte, NC 28217. Belk Gift Card Company LLC is named as the issuer of Belk gift cards, and the Belk Rewards Mastercard is issued by Synchrony Bank, which is a separate company.
History and ownership. A December 10, 2015 press release says Sycamore Partners completed its acquisition of Belk, Inc., that the company was founded in 1888 by William Henry Belk in Monroe, NC, and that it remained headquartered in Charlotte. BBB's profile gives the business start date as May 29, 1888 and the incorporation date as November 20, 1997 (from the profile's raw data), and shows BBB accreditation since December 1, 1949. In February 2021 Belk, Inc. and affiliated entities filed chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas (Belk, Inc., case 21-30630, jointly administered). The docket shows the petitions and a plan of reorganization filed on February 23, 2021, a hearing on February 24, 2021, an order confirming the plan (docket entry 61), and a final decree closing certain of the cases signed March 31, 2021, with later administration noted in the case of Bear Parent Inc., 21-30627. A source confirming who owns Belk today was not located in the sources checked on October 6, 2026; the 2021 docket lists Sycamore Partners II, L.P. as a party that ordered hearing transcripts. No chapter 11 filing by Belk in 2024 was identified in the sources checked on October 6, 2026.
Store and website status. When the belk.com home page was first opened on October 6, 2026 it displayed a notice that belk.com was "temporarily unavailable"; the customer-service, returns and policy pages opened normally later the same day.
Belk complaint record: USAComplaints posts, BBB and Trustpilot (as displayed October 6, 2026)
Posts on this site. 11 approved posts in this site's archive name Belk itself as the subject, dated 2002 (1 post), 2004 (1), 2008 (2), 2009 (1), 2010 (1), 2011 (2) and 2012 (3). A further 4 posts are linked as secondary mentions: 3 about the Belk store card that name GE Money Bank (GEMB) as the card issuer (2008, 2008 and 2011) and 1 from 2013 about a charge the author links to a third-party offer shown after a Belk order. All are unverified accounts by their authors. A keyword count of the 11 primary posts (a post can match several) finds wording about credit-card or late-fee handling in 3, about returns, refunds or gift cards in 2, and about online orders or website payment in 2. Older posts that were machine-rewritten, duplicated, or that only mention Belk in passing were not linked.
BBB. BBB profile for Belk (headquarters), Charlotte, NC, as displayed on October 6, 2026: rating A+; the page says Belk is a BBB Accredited Business; 372 total complaints in the last 3 years and 122 complaints closed in the last 12 months; 1.19 out of 5 from an average of 86 customer reviews. BBB says the profile covers Belk's headquarters and corporate-owned locations and that customer reviews are not used in the letter-grade calculation.
Trustpilot. As displayed on October 6, 2026: unclaimed profile for www.belk.com, 1.9 out of 5 from 495 reviews, 103 of them in the last 12 months. Trustpilot notes that the company has no history of asking for reviews, so reviews may not be representative.
These figures come from different sources with different methods and are not added together or compared with the 11 archive posts. A Belk store card complaint database lookup was not run, because the card is issued by Synchrony Bank rather than Belk.
Belk lawsuits and court filings
The court filings located in the sources checked on October 6, 2026 (CourtListener searches for Belk as a party in the Western District of North Carolina and the Southern District of Texas, the docket pages opened, and one 2026 opinion in the Northern District of Alabama) are listed under Court cases. They are not a complete list of every proceeding that involves Belk. They are the 2021 chapter 11 case, five civil actions filed in June and July 2025 against Belk, Inc. in the Western District of North Carolina, and Jenkins v. Belk, Incorporated.
Data-incident filings. The docket entries of the 2025 North Carolina cases do not state the claims; a June 20, 2025 news report in The Columbian says two of them were lawsuits over the May 2025 data breach in which the plaintiffs sought class-action status. Each of the five ended with the plaintiff's notice of voluntary dismissal. No later case against Belk about the May 2025 incident was identified in those searches.
Jenkins v. Belk, Incorporated (N.D. Ala., No. 1:25-cv-1155). The plaintiff, Rachel Jenkins, alleged that Belk employees at the Gadsden, Alabama store stopped and searched her on May 27, 2024 after accusing her of stealing, and sued Belk and an employee under 42 U.S.C. sections 1981, 1983 and 1986 and Alabama tort law. These are the plaintiff's allegations as summarized in the court's opinion. In a memorandum opinion signed September 4, 2026 the court wrote that it "DISMISSES Jenkins' federal claims WITH PREJUDICE" and "DISMISSES" the state-law claims "WITHOUT PREJUDICE," declining to continue exercising supplemental jurisdiction over them. The opinion decides Belk's motion to dismiss on the pleadings and makes no findings on whether the alleged events occurred.
Belk's Terms of Use contain an arbitration clause and class action waiver (described above), which can affect where a customer dispute is heard.
Is Belk Legitimate?
Belk, Inc. identifies itself in its Terms of Use as the operator of belk.com and Belk stores from Charlotte, North Carolina, and lists the address 2801 W Tyvola Rd, Charlotte, NC 28217 for legal notices. A December 10, 2015 press release describes Belk as founded in 1888 in Monroe, NC. As displayed on October 6, 2026, BBB shows an A+ rating and says Belk is BBB Accredited, with the complaint, review and Trustpilot figures shown in the complaint-record section above. Belk reported a cyber incident of May 7 to 11, 2025 to the New Hampshire Attorney General on June 5, 2025, five civil actions against Belk, Inc. filed in June and July 2025 were voluntarily dismissed by their plaintiffs, and on September 4, 2026 a federal court in Alabama dismissed the federal claims in Jenkins v. Belk, Incorporated with prejudice and the state-law claims without prejudice. Belk's chapter 11 case was filed in February 2021 and a final decree closing certain of the cases was signed on March 31, 2021. The posts on this site that name Belk are unverified accounts by their authors, dated 2002 to 2012.
