Suspended gift certificate—unrefunded

I purchased a one year gift subscription for my elderly aunt for last Christmas. She was delighted by the gift, for it allowed her to watch all her movie favorites.

This year, I called her to see if she'd like to continue with her subscription and she told me NetFlix has suspended the service because she no longer had a credit card. What she said made no sense to me. I had paid in advance for the one year of service. So I called NetFlix.

I was told they must have a credit card on file for the charges. What charges? I pre-paid in full. I was told the possible charges were for lost DVD's. But my aunt, 82 years old, cancelled her credit cards and didn't have a credit card for the account. So NetFlix cancelled her account. My aunt never told me because she was embarrassed and didn't want to trouble me.

And NetFlix was perfectly happy to cancel her account, keep my pre-paid funds, and never advise me, the one who bought the service, a single word.

When I called NetFlix to demand a refund, the representative said, although they didn't fulfill their agreement to provide the DVD's, because my aunt couldn't secure the $2 worth of goods they sent her, they were not obligated to refund the $100 they owed me.

If NetFlix needed a credit card to secure the account for the $2 worth of DVD's they sent out, they should have taken it from me at the outset. Why should the giftee be required to pay for a gift? Stupid, stupid policy. It's easy to see why NetFlix is in trouble. Frankly, their troubles are well earned.
