I responded to an ad in the local vehicle trader magazine for a 2001 model vehicle. I called about it and David at Phoenix Corvette Sales Limited told me that the car had 31,000 miles and would accept the amount of money I had to offer. I drove across town to see the car.
The car looked ok, but was priced a little low for having so few miles. I asked several times about the mileage and he kept emphasizing it only had 31,000. My brother happens to be a master mechanic at a dealership that was the same make as the car.
I was just getting ready to purchase the vehicle when I decided to call him. He ran the VIN number in the database to discover that the car had well over 100,000 miles and had been in for service many times for substantial repairs. My brother (Master ASE Certified) said that it would have been fairly easy to obtain the guage cluster from another vehicle. Rolling the odometer back was not an option because the gauge was digital. So in this instance, I avoided getting ripped-off but I wanted others to be able to find these guys name on the internet to avoid them. Thank you.
