I own a 1998 (HD) FLHTC. For years at a younger age, I worked on my own shooters.
At 56, a Disabled Vietnam Vet, I find the task of getting up & down, a little harder.
In Dec of 06, I stopped into SMC and spoke to Dano (owner) for an estimate to repair leakage around the jugs, clutches slipping and an electrical problem that had just started. Note: $4000.00 later, "11" trips back to his shop totaling (over) a year, almost killed at in an intersection (1) time and (pinned) under the bike another for over an hour, " I'm upset"!!
Back to Dec. Dano ask us to leave the bike and he'd call us with an estimate in a couple days. (2) months goes by and he's come up with a hundred excuses of why he hasn't put a price together.
We decided we'd just pick up the unit and take it somewhere else. The bike is in pieces, in a box. He's decided the unit needed to be rebuilt and he can do it all " top to bottom" for $3000.00 and take care of the electrical issue.
I called Tilley's in Salisbury, NC talked to Junior and he thought that was a fair price for a total rebuild.
The motor in the box trick was just the 1st of many. It took him months to put the bike back together. He was (always) finding other little things that needed to be fixed or replaced. Note: the electrical problem I fixed (myself). It was a 15 amp $5.00 breaker behind the headlight. Dano replaced the starter, the battery, the 30 amp to a 50amp breaker between the starter button and the solenoid. When all else failed, he installed a (by-pass) button on the solenoid. (now that's old school) He lied about replacing the clutches, jury-rigged the jackshaft on the new started and i could go on and on!!!
I took the bike to Tilley's. $1200.00 to fix (just) the things they found he had screwed up. We still have (no) clue as to what he's done to the "inside" of the engine (if) anything!!!
