New Tires One Weekend, Breaks Ruined the Next Weekend = about $1200 (and counting)

We needed new tires so me and my husband took our Jeep to Tires Plus. Friendly service so far. We only got two tires, it ended up costing around $270. We had mentioned that there was some noise coming from the front passenger side wheel and they said it was nothing we needed to worry about right now. Except for that small fix, the man told me "The car drives just fine."

During the week, we heard slight grinding when we pressed on the brakes. The grinding came from the rear tire on the passenger side. My husband thought it was coming from the front until it became progressively louder to the point where he had to admit there was something wrong.

We took it back to Tires Plus today and told them that the Jeep ran fine before we took it in, and now all of a sudden there's a loud grinding noise coming from the back tire. After doing an inspection, the gentleman behind the counter told us that our differential case (?) had broken and the liquid was leaking out onto the brakes, causing them to grind down. Not only did our differential case need to be replaced, but now we needed new brakes as well.

My husband fumed and said they needed to fix the problem because it was "just fine", like the gentleman the weekend earlier said it was, before they "fixed" our tires. The man said it wasn't their fault—it was a fluke incident. He also mentioned that on the receipt the week before, the gentleman helping us also suggested that we have a differential service performed on our Jeep. But this obviously wasn't an urgent matter—even to the salesman, since acccording to him, our car "drove just fine".

When asked what the price would be on new brakes and a differential service, the total came to $1000."There's noway, " I told my husband. We decided to fix the brakes ourselves but let them do the differential because the man said the car was not fit to be driven—that we'd have to tow it somewhere to get it fixed.

How much does that cost, you ask? Try $750. Does it make sense that brakes cost less than this thing? Does it make sense that only a week ago, our car "drove just fine" and now it's immobile? Does it make sense that I'm paying way more for a differential than two tires?

I'm sick to my stomach, feeling like I'm getting totally ripped off by these people. Is this "fluke" coincidence, or do you think there is more under the surface here?
