I had a five year lease on a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse which ended September. I planned on keeping the car after the lease ended, but before I could take care of the paperwork for this, the car broke down in October and was unfixable. I tried to return the car but was told that the car could not be returned unless it was in working condition.

I felt I was in a no-win situation, so I had the lease extended, and continued to pay off the rest of the car, even though the car was in the shop. This seemed to be my best option.

Fairly recently (April), I was contacted by a Mitsubishi representative who told me they were planning to reposses the car unless I turned it in since the lease had expired. I told them that the car was broken and at the shop and that I had been told earlier that I couldn't return the car. The representative then informed me that this was not true and I should have returned the car at that time.

In other words, I just spent one year and a half making payments on a lease that I need not have paid. Not to mention car insurance and the repair diagnostics to tell me that the car was unfixable. I feel that Mitsubishi owes me this money, and sent them a letter to tell them that, but never heard a response.
