Ripoff Received a letter from court regarding an old debt to JDByder 10 years old they have to be stopped

Back in 1995 I purchased a 1990 Cavalier from them. I was a single mom at the time and the car I was driving engine blew up. I was not making much money and didn't have any credit in my name and was going through a messy divorce and needed a car so I went to JDByrider. What a mistake. I had the car for 3 months when it started nickle and diming me to death. I called them about this and was told there was nothing they could do about it. With the amount of money I was making and having to do repairs to the car, I could not pay my payments on time. They would harass me constantly even when I called them and told them when I would be in, they would still keep calling. This car was so bad that my two boys, who were about 12 and 13 at the time, would have to push the car down the road so that I could pop the clutch to get it started. I also replaced the starter, brakes, and (believe it or not) the passenger door fell off the car one day. Just fell off when I opened it. I eventually had had enough and took the car back to them and told them they could have it back. Well, of course they sued me and starting garnishing my wages.

Eventually I quit that job and moved on and even moved out of state and of course after so many years the debt came off of my credit report. I have since rebuilt my credit and paid my debt for that staying on my credit for 7 years or so. I now receive a notice from them that I have to appear in court next month and that they want their $8,000 for this car. It shows on the notice that the original filing with the courts was done in 1996. It also says on the notice that if I do not appear that they can issue a warrant for my arrest!!! We are trying to buy a home, my husband and I, and if this goes back on my credit it will kill our chances. Can they do this? How can I stop this? Isn't there a statue of limitations on things like this? I know they have charged this off and took it as a loss a long time ago, plus I paid some on this car and they took my wages for awhile, so I know I don't owe them $8,000, I don't feel I owe them anything. Can someone please tell me what I can do and if this is legal?
