Gas tank leaking when fully filled

I have been dealing with a %u201Cgas leak%u201D on my car off and on since I bought the car. This gas leak is caused when I fill the tank all the way up and it leaks underneath my car in a puddle by the wheel. The puddle is small, maybe 2 inches in diameter but any time you have a gas leak this is worrisome. I ignored this problem since I bought it because I didn%u2019t want to take the time to bring it in. However, my husband borrowed the car and he said your gas can leaks so I decided I had better be safe than sorry.

On Monday August 19 I took my car to Simmons For at 13485 Portage Road, Vicksburg MI 49097 and told them I wanted them to check on a gas leak. They first called me to tell me that it will leak from the top of the tank if I overfill it. That is not what I described and I told them to try again. They looked around and found evidence of leaking and charged me $40.00 for a half hour of work looking at the gas tank.
They told me it would be 180.00 to pull the gas tank out, check it, and put it back in. They told me a gas tank was 764 dollars and if I had a leak I would have to pay for a new gas tank. They told me hopefully it was the collar leaking and that was only 94 dollars. Prepared to spend quite a bit of money on my vehicle with 45,000 miles on it I brought the car back in on August 23. They kept my car over the weekend and smoke tested the gas tank and could not find a leak. They filled my tank and it did not leak. They could not find a problem with my tank which was a good thing correct?

Wrong! I went to pay my bill and the service technician told me that the car was designed to leak a little fuel from the bottom of the car by the wheel if it was filled up. They said it was a pressure relief valve on my car and that it was a normal thing to happen with my car. I%u2019m angry because first of all a leak of gas is never acceptable. Who designed this so that it could leak on the ground? Isn%u2019t that why the gas turns off so you don%u2019t over fill it? What a terrible decision to allow this to happen.
Secondly my car was used as a guinea pig at Ford that day. Not one service technician told me that there was a design issue (a flaw really) and I believe that is because they either did not know or they did not want to tell me. Either way it is very upsetting that I didn%u2019t have all the correct information to make the decision whether or not to test my gas tank. The dealership did take off 90 dollars from the 220.00 bill that I had to pay so the whole fiasco cost me 130.00 dollars. That is 130.00 that I did not need to spend on my car to find out it%u2019s designed to leak gas. I%u2019m very disappointed with the service that I received and the design of the pressure relief valve as I feel it is very unsafe.
