Jimmy Johns
Berates and Humiliates Employees Publicly

As a former employee of Jimmy Johns I wish to file a complaint about a terrible manager practice. I decided to post this on the complaint website instead of through the Jimmy Johns website as a more public warning to those currently seeking employment at this Jimmy Johns location. I recently moved to the state of Colorado and quickly landed a job at Jimmy Johns. I felt very fortunate to have found a job so quickly until I realized what I have gotten myself into.
During the interviewing and employment process I learned about some disadvantages of working at Jimmy Johns, such as the possibilities of being fired from calling off sick or not memorizing the menu perfectly within the first week. It wasn't long until I also found out the rudeness the managers and store owner could have towards their employees.
Since the day I began training I was treated regularly with disrespect. I was not the only one, however. The store owner had a very public argument with another employee in which he was using the f-word and loudly swearing while customers (and the health inspector) were watching. One of the managers made rude comments for several minutes about an potential candidate behind her back after she asked about her interview date - making remarks on both her shy personality and her appearance. Other employees as well as myself were under the constant threat of being degraded publicly or even fired for the smallest of mistakes. People who were fired were talked about badly from the managers and store owner and the reasons of termination were known to the other employees. Customers were not immune to this treatment, either. Managers would sometimes show their distaste when customers had special requests and once I had to stand up for a customer when a manager and employee were making fun of her appearance. The list can go on and on, but I think you get the point.
I put up with this rudeness and immaturity for two months and last Friday I quit after a manager berated and humiliated me in front of the other workers and customers over a delivery that took longer than expected. I was still being trained from an in-shopper to a full-time delivery driver and because of my new residency, I am still not very acquainted with the area. I found the delivery location (an elementary school) with ease, but I had to wait several minutes a for the teacher to send the money to the office. I explained the situation to my manager but he didn't believe me and began ridiculing me over the issue, questioning my intelligence and threatening to fire me over it. I asked him to stop because it was making me feel stupid, and he responded with "I wouldn't treat you like that if you didn't act like you are." I asked him if he was insinuating that I was a moron, and he just replied with the same response as before. I decided then that the disrespect was more than anyone should have to take and I left Jimmy Johns for good.
I think it is a shame that I felt the need to end my employment so suddenly and after such a brief period of employment, especially because that thought would have never even crossed my mind at any other job in the past. I always try to work very hard and have never been under even the slightest threat of being fired or publicly humiliated at any other job I have had. I also believe that it is right and loyal to always give a two weeks notice before quitting a job, but I just couldn't tolerate this behavior anymore. I stood silently for too long while those in charge abused their power to hurt others, and I had to stand up for myself eventually. Granted, not all of the managers or employees acted this way, but I strongly believe the store owner should clean up his attitude, for the sake of his employees' welfare as well as his business. Jimmy Johns should have the environment of a successful sandwich shop, not a middle school. For the unfortunate soul who has applied for my position, you may want to reconsider the interview - the money isn't always worth the degradation.
