Now as I begin I want people to know that this is not rant, or just another disgruntled employee but genuine concern for the community. I dont believe in stereotypes but in this case the gentleman I am about to write about is anything but a gentleman and exactly what he says he is, a general contractor by trade or in other words a scumbag.
I was briefly hired on, and as a previous business owner myself I understood the difficulties of starting out, this man continually used the fact that he just opened as an excuse for everything. I was under the impression that I was being hired on as a normal w-2 minimum wage employee.
Just a few days into employment I sat down with this ego maniac and asked for a solid job description and plan for my wages. He could never give an honest answer. Frustrated and concerned that he was deceitful and had an alternative motive, because I asked if the position had room to grow, I am well over qualified for just scooping ice cream, I agreed to join his Nazi regime with
the hopes of advancement. I was shooting for manager, when I would bring it up he steered toward the language of A 1 employee. Now for all you had working blue collar people Im sure a red flag is going off, this man wants cheap labor; he wants a manager he just doesnt want to pay for one.
Even comment from his own associates and close friends portrayed him to only own a business and doesnt actually run them. I quote Now make sure to add an hour because you know he will take a hour., or, A friend and I have a bet to see how long it will take him to have someone else take this over too. He assured me that we would get things on the books, but for the time being it would be under the table. Now it was against my better judgment to accept his checks, even though I brought up the
fact that I thought this was supposed to be under the table, and went as far to confront him to not 1099 me (my husband was present for this as he was there to pick me up and witness his statement). He assured me that that was not the case;
yesterday I receive my 1099 in the mail. So not only is he a scum bag, but a bald face liar. This is just the first part, for all the current and potential employees. This man not only illegally 1099 me, but also misclassified me with the IRS, and violated minim wage laws, because I am now being held responsible for my own taxes my real wages were $6.33 per hour, which currently as of January Florida minimum is $7.67.
Now allow me tell you about the things I saw behind the scenes, how he allows a woman held responsible for training us to wear her hair loose, mind you its very long and in food service totally unsanitary. He also made several comments about cutting corner to make code or pass inspection, in regards to how he had a broken paper towel machine in the bathroom, how he had an open vent over food prep area, and allowed to conduct business with no protect cover where we mixed Liquid Nitrogen into the cream, where customers where placing their hands to very dangerous levels of frozen pipes carrying the Liquid Nitrogen. He went days without changing the containers that held the cream just continually refilling them. I was the only one that did not openly spray chemicals and controlled contact of chemical to surfaces by spraying into a towel. He even allowed us to wash dishes improperly, not using commercial disinfectants. Other employees would show up with jewelry and hair ties around wrist with strands of hair loose hanging over food. He even refused me proper safety measures in the back where
we washed dishes, I suggested a rubber mat (like the one found in front of the shop being used for a door mat, even though it was obvious it was a commercial mat for dish washing) to protect us employees from falls, as I seen our dishwasher come in to work with flip flops, without being sent home immediately. The level of unprofessionalism form the man is utterly disguising. He openly drank alcohol in the business and outside the business, from when I would show up till we closed. I even witness one night a friend deliver another gallon of Rum and left in a paper bag at a central table for hours for any and all customers to see. Someone that is establishing a family orientated business shouldnt smoke the smelliest cigars like a chimney outside
the business. I know if I was a customer regardless of the laws in the state of Florida I would not appreciate trying to enjoy my treat exposed to second hand smoke let alone my children.
I supplied this man with a resume; I clearly outlined my abilities and desires for the position as manager, he later claimed he just
hired me to make ice cream, if that was the case why wouldnt he hire the many others that came in with no managerial skills that would have been happy with the peanut this guy was offering. He wasted my time, and insulted my family, when I expressed that I understood his circumstances but needed a little more certainty of my duties and wages to support my family he replied and I quote, I didnt begin this business to take care of your children, why a childless scrooge would want to start a business geared toward children, youth, and families is beyond me besides to capitalize on what is to him just a gimmick that appeals to loving community of this city full of honest hard working families, nothing this man knows about.
I believe in the American way of small businesses, I watched my father build his company, I loved owning my own business for two years before moving here, and all I ever wanted to do was provide excellent service and help this man develop his business, all he wants to do is rip people off!
Heed my warning to those who want to do business with this person, and to those who continue to allow this man to serve you food with no knowledge or previous experience of the business or anyone on his staff know squat either, where their motto is trial and error, error being the risk of serious health violations.
