On 02/02/08, I visited Friendly's restaurant in Ithaca, NY. Going to the take-out window, I placed an order of a Kid's Meal for my niece and a bowl of soup for myself. Kathleen, the server handling my take-out order harassed me as to whether or not the kid's meal was for a kid. I know they have a 12 and under requirement, but I didn't know that I had to present the child at the take-out window when placing my order. Kathleen repeatedly acted as though I was cheating the system. My four year old niece was in the car with my sister-in-law while I placed the order!
Things got worse when I paid for the order. The total was $8.96. I handed Kathleen a $20 bill. I received six cents back. I mentioned that I was also owed $11. Kathleen insisted that she had given me the bills (she had not) and acted as though I was scamming her.
Friendly's (at least at this location) has servers handle their own payments. Rather than place money from orders in one location and tips in another, all money goes into one pouch. Because of this system, employees providing incorrect change cannot be challenged.instead of looking like she shortchanged me $11, Kathleen looks like she received an extra $11 in tips!
Kathleen cheated me and Friendly's, through their system devoid of checks and balances, helped her do just that. From now on I will both avoid this Friendly's location and pay using my credit card, where incorrect change cannot be an issue.
Incorrect change, harassment about my order, and accusations of scamming. What a wonderful experience. My niece and I were happy with the food at least, but oh that service:- (
