I received a phone call for my husband regarding a Montgomery-Ward debt. We have been together for greater than 10 years and he hasn't had a Wards account since well before we were married.
I told the caller such and she asked if he was in the military and after I (stupidly) confirmed that he was she said it was an old debt and that they had been trying to contact him.
I then went and confronted my husband and he said that no way the account had been closed free and clear. I told him that they would be calling to make arrangements for payment and I then told him to do nothing. I then sat down and wrote instructions to leave by the phone for when they called.
Since I deal with accounts that go to collection agencies red flags immediately went up. Why would a company who wrote off an account almost 20 years ago (if they did) and sent it to a collection service (if they did) which then was reported to the credit bureau's (where it didn't show up when we bought our home)
try to collect a debt?
I thank you all for filing your grievances because I knew something was wrong here and I certainly hope to answer the phone the next time they call, but if I don't I have left a script for my husband and will be filing with the State of Texas against this company.
