I opened up two Care Credit accounts about two years ago with my mother. One was just her name and one has both of our names on it. I was paying them when I got laid off and they went to collections.
This past January, after repeated harassment of both my mother and myself, we came to an agreement with the collection agency. They threatened to take my mother to court and were completely uncooperative in helping us to settle this situation. I spoke with a woman at the collection agency many times in order to fix this situation. Not one person could tell us how much we had already paid or how this number accumulated to far beyond the original loan value. We have paid almost twice as much on these loans and none of the money has gone to the balance of either of these cards. The collection agency would not or could not give us ANY information at all. They just kept telling us to call Care Credit. I called Care Credit repeatedly, trying in vain to explain the situation and not one person there would give me any information either – at all. Not one person would tell me how much we had paid, how the fees accumulated, what the balance was –anything at all. Then they threatened to take my mother to court.
Both of us have spoken with people on both sides many times trying to fix this and not one person would tell us how to fix this. We just kept getting threats of court and telling us there was nothing they could do. Yet, the harassing phone calls have not stopped.
I was told that I had to inform them in writing that I would like a full accounting of both accounts since they were opened. I did this in January, requesting copies of both of the accounts be sent to me and my mother. It is now the end of June, and we have never received anything, yet the calls continue.
We also paid the collection agency a lump sum of over $600 in January and arranged for 2 payments per month to come from my checking account in order to settle this. They took the payments from my account for three months and then stopped. My checking account information has not changed at all, and now the calls continue. They are telling us that they have never received anything and nothing was arranged. No one will help, they only threaten and neither the collection agency nor Care Credit will give us any information or help in any way.
I am at the end – I do not know what to do. This small loan of $5000 has now kept my mother from re-mortgaging her house, getting a small business loan, credit cards and more. We have tried in vain to rectify this, pay it off and end all of this harassment, but every time we pay someone and arrange for something, it seems to disappear into thin air and no one has any records of it.
