5 More misleading, ripoff illegal credit card scams according to FTC Telemarketing Sales Rule

I was contacted by a telemarketer from World Benefits who said he had been referred by my bank. He knew the name of my bank (which is an independent bank only in the Southern California area) and my account number. I was told I was eligible to receive a credit card with a credit line of $2,000.

This was sometime in late October. The salesman said that in order to process the credit card, World Benefits would deduct a non-refundable fee of $299 from my account on Nov. 28. I phoned on Wednesday, Dec. 10, to see if the credit card was on its way and was told that realistically, the credit card wouldn't be issued until January or perhaps February.

I asked to cancel the entire deal and was told that I should have done that within three days after making the commitment. I have since learned that it is against federal law to ask you to pay for their service until you get your credit card or loan.
