I received a collections notice in the mail dated April 11 from American Credit & Collections, LLC. The notice stated that I owed $159.00 to PennFoster, and the debt was sent to ACC for collection.
The debt is valid. I did owe the money, I had just for got to pay the last payment. So, I write a check on April 20 for $159.00. The exact amount on the notice from ACC.
ACC had called me sometime in between and left a message threatening legal action. So, I had looked them up on this website and saw all the complaints against them. I decided to make a copy of the notice and the check I sent them.
I sent the payment in the mail, but the first week in June I receive a letter dated May 26 stating that I still owe $20.00. I kept the letter so I could call them to find out why I still owe $20. Then yesterday I go to the post office to find another letter from them saying that I owe $20.
I called a few minutes ago to find out why I still owed $20 when I know I paid them in full on April 20. A very rude man answered the phone (did not get his name). I explained why I was calling. He stated that the $20 is an oudated collection fee? He says that I will be getting another $10 added on at the end of this month.
So, what I gathered from this call is that there was a $10 fee per month if I didn't pay the bill. Fine, but I got the letter in April and paid the bill off in April so there should not have been and fees to access. I should have been paid up with them right?
Also, shouldn't they have had the fee for April attached with the $159.00 I owed at the time? Why would they bill that seperate.
I am not sure if I should seek legal council or not. I really don't want this $20 or $30 on my credit report, but I am not sure what to do. I don't think this $20 outdated collection fee is warranted.
