I received approximately 6 phone calls in one morning from an unknown number on my work and my cell phone. The caller (who spoke with a very heavy foreign accent; to the extent I could not understand him entirely) left voice messages saying I must call him back immediately or have my attorney call him back, and that if I disregarded the message then he would sue me and I was on my own. The caller left a "hotline direct number", 213/550-4188 and this is in California.
I returned the call from my work phone and was told he was a "senior investigator"; that my "social security number and bank account was under investigation from CashNet USA". He gave me a "lawsuit number JKC 936035". I requested that he cease and desist calling me at any number and he told me he didn't have to cease. I then asked for any allegation of money owed to be sent to my home address (which I did not provide) under theFair Debt Collection Practices Act and the man said "we are not legally bound to send you anything" and that they would not send me any such letter. I ended up hanging up as the man kept arguing with me and continued to threaten to sue me.
A note of interest: I went to the CashNet USA website and tried to log in as a returning customer and was not recognized in their system. I did find a fax number on the website and am faxing a demand for information on any debt claimed to be owing.
I am filing a complaint with the State Attorney General's office today.
